I have a 12 year old DS. He is a real foodie and I have always had to watch what he eats. He just seems to have no 'full' feeling. He also has aspergers.

I've been low carbing for a long time, but didn't really consider it for DS or DP, so DS has always eaten huge quantities of cereal and bread. In fact he once said if he was ever forced to live off bread and water alone he would be very happy indeed. However, over the Easter holidays I noticed he was eating far too many sugary things (thanks to the ILs bringing him lots of chocolate) and after eating a whole box of fudge and terrys chocolate orange in one day and then being starving the next day and polishing off half a packet of Oreos, I thought enough was enough.

I talked to him about it and he said he always feels hungry, and half an hour after eating he feels hungry again. I asked him what hunger felt like and he said it was his brain telling him to eat (so not empty stomach feelings that I get when I know I haven't eaten for a while, so not real hunger).

I talked to him about trying low carb to help him not feel hungry and he was so incredibly receptive it surprised me!

He went and researched it, came up with a list of foods to eat and some meal plan ideas, and we went from there.

He started on Thursday lunchtime, and has been doing really well. I haven't cut out all carbs, he still eats plenty of vegetables and most fruit, he has decided bananas are an occasional food though, as well as sweet potatoes.

He makes his own breakfast smoothie with greek yoghurt, a little cream, seeds and nuts and some frozen blueberries, and then I make him lunch of a salad with protein (what DP and I have every day anyway) and we are just skipping the carb out of evening meals, still lots and lots of veg and either chicken, fish, choose or soya products.

He has been much more cheerful, much less 'aspie', and said just now that he doesn't feel hungry between meals. He snacks on either a hunk of cheese or a small handful of nuts and this seems to be working.

He soemtimes makes himself a pudding of greek yoghurt with frozen blueberries too (he is very routine based, always has had pudding after a meal, usually a fruit yoghurt, so this means he can keep his routine)

I think he is sleeping better too. I have ordered him some soy protein powder, some sugar free peanut butter and some roughage (fsyllium husks I think they were?).

Anyone else want to join me? I think I may need more support from others when he goes back to school, with packed lunches atc and would love to hear others success stories.

Last night we had a takeway after a long drive home from a weekend away, instead of his usual chicken korma and peshwari naan he ordered tandoori chicken and made a salad to go with it. He was perfectly satisfied with this and even left some for today's lunch, in the past he would have polished off the lot.

Sounds interesting, omdb! Does he recognise that he feels better as well?

over you might want to look at the book Gut & Psychology Syndrome, I think it will back up what you are finding yourself with your son Smile

Yes BIWI he has said a few times that he feels great, but it is more in his behaviour that we see it, he is not as rude and snappy as usual, and he is responding to us nicely which is not the norm! He has said he doesn't feel as hungry and his brain isn't telling him to eat Grin

I will look into that sleep, I have been reading loads today already!

I am preparing myself for him to suddenly get bored of it though and have a meltdown and demand shreddies again though.
