Just started a couple of days ago. Eating around 50g carbs per day and have been using mfp to make sure I eat enough calories. I am so so hungry. Will this pass?

Are you eating enough fat? Are you eating full fat versions of stuff, yogurt etc.

Its the fat that keeps you full. If youre eating a low fat diet with no carbs you will be starving.

The first few days are always the hardest. It will get easier as your body adjusts to the change in diet.

Hang in there! It's worth it. I boil lots of eggs and keep in a lock&lock box for snacking on, also those sticks of cathedral cheddar, cooked bacon strips and prosciutto with Philly inside. Just takes the edge off.

What have you been eating? If you list out your meals for me, let me see if I can help.

You should be eating lots of fat and plenty of protein. And not depriving yourself in terms of food - so no need to have tiny portions - eat till you are satisfied. (Obviously this isn't an excuse to pig out!)

Yesterday:
two coffees with full fat milk
breakfast: two poached eggs, some ham and an avocado
lunch: big tuna salad with lettuce, cucumber and some oil drizzled. handful of raspberries.
snack: handful of macadamia nuts
tea: baked piece of cod wrapped in parma ham with tomatoes and rosemary and olive oil

Does that seem OK?
Is the hungry feeling something which you just have to go through and it passes? If so I can handle it but if it is going to last then this is not sustainable for me. I didn't feel this hungry when I did 5:2 (serial dieter alert).
I don't need to lose that much weight- maybe a stone or less and I want to find a woe that works long term for me and is really clean and healthy rather than strict diets that I can't keep up!

Im pretty sure that's not enough fat. Poached, baked, drizzled. These are a low fat dieters ways of cooking.

I'd have your coffee with double cream, scramble your eggs in butter and have plenty of mayonnaise with your tuna. Worked for me - I only wanted to lose about ten pounds.

You have to give your body fuel and if you low carb that fuel must come from fat. You will feel a bit odd until your body realises that carbs aren't coming and gets on with fat burning. After that you should get a big burst of energy. I wouldn't say I ever felt hungry but I did feel sort of odd and empty at first. If I thought about it I couldn't honestly say it was proper hunger though. Its weird trying to add in fat after years of anti-fat brainwashing but your tolerance does increase. Smile

BIWI · 11/08/2014 14:17

Yep - you need more fat. You're eating lean protein which also means you need to add even more fat to your food. It's the combination of the fat and protein which will keep you satisfied as well as providing the fuel that you need

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 11/08/2014 17:07

Ah! I see, than you. I think I should rethink and have a more moderate amount of carbs then because I don't really like butter or drenching food in oil. Nothing to do with the fat, I just don't really like it!
Thanks for the advice.

Can you cope with eating fattier cuts of meat? For example, belly pork instead of pork fillet, or chicken thighs (with the skin on!) instead of chicken breast?

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 13/08/2014 09:12

Yes that I can do!
