How do I make a BulletProofCoffee?

I have instant coffee and a big jar of coconut oil, which looks and smells alarmingly like a Yankee Candle.

What do I do with it?

I've not done this but I think you just add a splash to your coffee when it's been made.... then whisk it up a bit....

Slatecross · 15/01/2014 08:30

Done it. Apparently you add a teaspoon of butter and cinnamon too. It doesn't really taste like coffee anymore, more like a medicine you might find on TimeTeam. Am waiting for the fantastic "high". Any second...

I use a good coffee, add about 2 tsps of butter and 2 tsps of coconut oil. Whizz together with a handheld blender (it's gross if you don't whizz it IMO).

I think it tastes like a silky latte.

IBlameThePenguins · 16/01/2014 20:42

how was it? is it true it sends you on an all time high?

Slatecross · 16/01/2014 21:42

No all time high, but I didn't blend it, I just stirred it until the slick cleared. It was like a weird bad gravy.

Will get out blender...

Excuse my ignorance but what is a bullet proof coffee and what is it good for?

BerylStreep · 19/01/2014 00:21

Bullet proof coffee is basically coffee blended with butter and coconut oil.

Honestly not as gross as it sounds.

A few benefits:

Coconut oil has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, so great all round basically.

It means that you can have coffee more or less dairy free if dairy is an issue for you (yes, I know butter is dairy, but lots of people can tolerate butter when they can't tolerate other dairy - something to do with fat soluble enzymes and water soluble ones).

The high fat content satiates the appetite and keeps you full for ages.

I had one at about 3pm (had no lunch) and it kept me going until dinner at 8pm.

I'm sure there are others.

Whisking is the key.

Butter, good coffee, coconut oil, dbl cream.

Keeps you going though. SmileSmileBrewBrew

Thanks for that, I will have to get myself some coconut oil then. Where's the best place to get it?

CointreauVersial · 21/01/2014 17:15

I love coconut. I love coffee. And I love butter. But the thought of the three of them whisked together is making me feel faintly nauseous. I'll stick to cappuccino, thanks.

BerylStreep · 21/01/2014 18:01

Cointreau Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Ruprekt · 22/01/2014 22:03

I got my oil in Waitrose but. H&B have a penny sale on and coconut oil is in the deal.

Really good breakfast....a bpc! SmileSmile

I would have thought bleuch! too but last year I had a terrible cough that wouldn't budge and a German friend insisted I put a spoonful of butter in my honey and lemon. I was very Hmm but it was GORGEOUS!

So now I've finally got my coconut oil (Jaysus it's pricey!) and am aout to imbibe...

Lovecat · 23/01/2014 11:29

And it is lovely :) Needs something to sweeten it slightly but that could just be my expectations because it looks so much like a latte. Yum :)

calzone · 23/01/2014 20:31

I love them.

janmoomoo · 30/01/2014 11:14

I suggest a gradual build up though, starting with a teaspoon of coconut oil and then gradually adding butter, a little more each time. I started off on the full spoon of coconut oil and two of butter and not only did it make me feel sick most of the day but had some unfortunate side effects for me (toilet related!). It is nice tho if you whisk it up with one of those little electric milk frothing stick things.

CynicalandSmug · 31/01/2014 21:51

I use a hand blender or my little drink blender, makes a lovely drink with so many health benefits.

NoelOfLorst · 02/02/2014 10:15

I take back everything I've ever thought about this.

I'm waiting for my internet shop to arrive, with an empty fridge so in desperation I just made a black coffee, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, two teaspoons of butter and two teaspoons of coconut oil and whizzed it up in the cafetiere with a stick blender (this probably breaks many H&S guidelines)

It was lovely Shock

A gulper, more than a sipper perhaps, but certainly not stomach turning and not how you'd expect coffee with butter to taste

teaandthorazine · 02/02/2014 10:19

I've just made a coffee with cream and coconut oil. It smells great! But even for a butter fiend like me, I can't quite imagine dolloping a bit of the old Kerrygold in there...plus I don't have a stick blender (whassat?)

NoelOfLorst · 02/02/2014 10:32

You know, one of those... things Grin just hand held, with a blade on the bottom that whizzes round and you hold it into soup, or smoothies, or glass cafetieres of scalding hot coffee and butter. I think stick blenders is the name.

The butter thing used to blow my mind too, but honestly it was really nice! I even used salted butter Shock
