Is it okay to drink full fat milk?

I'm onto butter now, but don't know what type of milk to drink. I know some low carb people don't drink milk because it has sugar in, but I can't manage without it.

How much are you drinking? Milk is very carby if you drink a lot, so it's really not great. It's OK in tea and coffee, as long as you don't have too much.

There are 4.8g carbs in 100ml of full fat milk (which is lower in carbs than skimmed or semi-skimmed), but 100ml isn't much at all.

I'll have about 100mls to make porridge for breakfast. It's the only meal of the day when I have a carb. I'm having a small bowl of full fat goats yoghurt on an evening. I have skimmed milk in redbush tea because I prefer the taste.

I'm trying to increase my fat intake a bit so that I don't get hungry.

But that's going to add up to a lot of carbs, hidden home - have you worked out how many you're eating?

And you really should be aiming to get your carbs from vegetables and salad.

(It's also going to end up being quite a bit of dairy, which could be a problem)

Other ways to add fat to your diet:

Cook with butter or oil
Add butter to your veg
Add mayonnaise to your meals (but make sure it's a low carb one, or a home-made one)
Have salad with your meals, dressed with an oil-based vinaigrette
Buy fattier cuts of meat (e.g. pork belly, chicken thighs, lamb breast, and eat the chicken with the skin on)

I don't know how many carbs I'd be allowed to have Confused I've cut out all bread, cakes, biscuits, potatoes, sugar etc. I'm having very small amounts of pasta (about once a week) and some brown rice.

I can't go carb free because I tried that before and felt unwell.

I'm eating lots of salad and some vegetables.

I'm just confused about dairy products really.

You won't be going carb-free if you're eating salad and veg - that is exactly where you should be getting your carbs from.

But if you're still eating pasta and brown rice, you are also eating too many carbs.

Re dairy - cheese and cream are usually all fine on a low carb diet as they are low in carbs. Yoghurt is also good, but you do need to keep an eye on the carbs, as some can be higher than other (and we're only talking about plain/natural yoghurt here). Milk isn't great as it has too many carbs (unless you really restrict it)

The more concerning thing about dairy is that many people can't tolerate it - not in the sense of allergic reactions but in the sense that it can impede weight loss

Why not come over to Bootcamp - have a look at all the stuff that's on our spreadsheet - loads of information about low carbing! The next Bootcamp starts on Monday.
