MyFitnessPal and ratios

I would like to start a low carb diet and will probably join the next bootcamp but was wondering if anyone knew what ratios of fat/protein/carbs would be a good starting point on MFP? It defaults to 30/20/50 I think which definitely doesn't seem low carb! Also how do you factor in fibre? I know you can add a column for it but how does fibre affect carbohydrate counts? Hope that makes sense! TIA

I set my MFP ratios to 30/35/35 but I do lower carb, not low carb - at my current calorie level this give me up to 100g carbs to play with per day, and if I need to increase my cals for whatever reason I make sure I do it with fats & protein. If you're doing bootcamp then you probably want to be around 10/60/30 or 10/50/40 I guess. Yes to adding the column for fibre, and I'd add in the sodium one too - it's enlightening. But be aware that many of the MFP values for sodium are way off because people don't understand the difference between g and mg and enter them wrongly, usually vastly underestimating the actual sodium value. I have to manually correct nearly everything I ever find on the database for sodium. Back to fibre - it's complicated - in the UK fibre counts are separate from carb counts, but on US products and entries fibre is included in carb counts and therefore needs to be subtracted from total counts. So at worst you could assume that you need to add your fibre count to your carb column, at best you'd need to subtract it. In practise it's somewhere between the two and for the purposes of bootcamp I wouldn't worry about it, just make sure you hit your fibre targets (and fwiw I'd double them from the default MFP values, they're low).

Thank you for that. I have jiggled it around and am going to ignore the calories I think and focus on keeping the carbs under 50g for now to see what happens. I have set my fibre to 25g for now but will keep tinkering- (TMI coming up Wink ) based partially on bowel movements!

I know drinking lots of water on boot camp is already encouraged but it's particularly important when increasing fibre, so don't forget to drink sufficiently to keep stools soft otherwise the extra fibre can result in v painful movements. Bowel problem veteran here!

Grin Am sloshing away! Have yet to lose weight but am eating loads and not putting on weight which is good. Now it's time to actually address my crap emotional eating properly as I can do it without having to give up stuff I like, which has just made things worse in the past. It's very weird to be able to eat things I like and not worry about getting fatter. And all the water is making my skin look better than it has in ages. I have the spotty version of rosacea but don't need the cream at the moment. Result!

Try 70/20/10.

SteeleyeStan · 09/01/2014 19:45

I use MFP sometimes and have it set on 70% fat, 20% protein and 10% carbs. Remember that if you log exercise, it's gonna push up your allowed carbs too, so keep an eye on that if you're aiming to keep them low. :)

SteeleyeStan · 09/01/2014 19:46

I also just ignore the fibre (since I'm not really interested :) ) and use British product informations or ones I put in myself.

Arbuthnot · 09/01/2014 20:02

Am going to try 70/20/10. Do you still stick with 1200 calories? Definitely need calorie control at this point as am compulsive overeater so don't stop when full!

I never bother adding in my exercise cos I can never find the right things to match and am not convinced their numbers are right. Am doing 20 minutes of walking a day and hoping that I eventually feel motivated to go back to the gym as I am paying for the bloody thing!!
