Can you 'low-carb' without 'high protein'?

I a bit suspicious of taking in large amounts of protein as per Atkins etc but I've heard good things about low carb diets.

What 'diet regime' should I look at that cuts carbs right down?

TIA

Hmm. There are only 3 food groups - carbs, protein and fat. If you cut one down you have to substitute with another!! If you want to focus on carbs, try a brilliant book called Carbs & Cals, which shows you pictures of almost every food you can think of, and lists the carb content.

Not really! A low carb diet is high in fat and protein. But there is nothing wrong with that. If you want to join us, the next low carb Bootcamp starts on 13 Jan.

Biwi please can you 'elp? Low carb veggie, is it possible?

thenightsky · 26/12/2013 22:34

I did BIWI's bootcamp last New Year and it was a revelation. I was a veggie, but unfortunately had to start eating fish and chicken. Lost 2 stone and have kept it off all year though!

Low carb veggie is possible, but it's harder than if you can eat meat. Rose Elliott has written a great low carb veg book though.

DeepThought · 26/12/2013 22:54

Thank you my love x

Will get Rose Elliott book

The nightsky thank you too

So, what 'pre-reading' do I need to do for BIWI's bootcamp?

I like to do my homework! Grin

docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmNIskihgXotdFVPcF9zWUhIal9BbTl5SnlTM3BlWVE#gid=2

if you click on the spreadsheet there are tabs at the bottom with bootcamp rules, carb counts etc. I find using tesco.com website also useful as they show carb counts of most of their foods.

There is a big long recipe thread somewhere too. I have it saved to favs on my home computer (at work at the mo, so cannot link for you).

One of the best books to read, if you feel like buying a book, is "Escape the Diet Trap" by Dr John Briffa.

And have a look at the Bootcamp Recipe Thread lots of lovely recipes there as well as some veggie ones.

BIWI what's the reason for no nuts?

BIWI · 27/12/2013 15:45

Because, although nut make a great snack later on in Bootcamp Light, they can quickly become quite carby. And, during Bootcamp we're also trying not to snack between meals.

An awful lot of people eat high healthy animal fats, medium protein and low carb. In my view that is the path to good health and it was the demonising of fat which led the nation in the last 40 years to eat so much more sugar.
