I never thought I'd be writing this, as I have battled with my weight for as long as I can remember.

After many failed diets, or plans for healthy living, I finally have got into the 'zone' and have managed to loose 20lbs in a month. This basically was eating healthy whole and natural foods including full fat natural yogurts etc (which satisfied me more than the fat free stuff) and, I have been using the exercise bike everyday!

I still have a long way to go, but my appetite has completely gone. I am (surprisingly) making myself eat something, but it's a real struggle and I get full up so much quicker. I'm trying to eat things like a handful of seeds or half a yogurt, just to up my fat intake, but so as I don't have to eat huge quantities.

My problem? I keep reading about 'starvation mode' when your metabolism slows down if you are not eating enough calories. I reckon my calorie intake is between 600-800 a day now.

I'm terrified that if I false myself to eat more than I actually want to eat, my appetite will come back with a vengeance. Can someone clarify this for me! Surely (still being 3 stone over weight still) I still have plenty of fat stores to live off before my body goes into starvation mode?

Never thought I'd type such a post!, but any advice would be welcome. Thank you.

Humm I have to admit being on low carb makes me so full up - today I are so much I thought I was gonna be sick. I've never been a fan of eating unless you're hungry so maybe you can try small fatty meals or add a few carbs to shake your body into action. I think your cal intake is very low but then on low carb you're not meant to count cals so forget that

starvation mode is one of those debated topics. many experts beleive it to be a myth. in any case it has been proven that your metabolism cannot be permanently damaged and will return to normal very quickly once your eating habits improve.

think about diets like Lighter Life where they eat 600 cals a day for many weeks and lose weight consistently. They eat a low carb diet which puts them into ketosis. As long as your body is using your own body fat for energy, it doesn't matter how much food you eat.

that said - you still need the right nutrients. So even if you are not eating much right now, ensure that what you do eat is high on the nutrient scale. red meat, green veg, good fats.

I always say, go with what your body tells you. if you are not hungry, there is a reason. Your appetite will return when you body has used its reserves.

"Your appetite will return when you body has used its reserves."

Like, all the fat in the body?

Isn't that the definition of death by starvation? If malnutrition doesn't kill you first through organ failure, that is.

CoteDAzur · 07/01/2014 14:04

I'm not saying that applies to OP, by the way Smile

Low carb works differently. You are changing the way your body works, so it will use its fat reserves for energy. For this reason your metabolism does not slow down. Eat to what your body tells you it needs, but make sure you are making well-balanced decisions. No need to add carbs, that will defeat the whole object.
