Lightweight low-carbing?

I am thinking of starting a low-carb diet. I'm not really motivated by weight loss - I could lose a few kgs, but am reasonably happy where I am - I'm mostly interested in the health benefits and having more energy.

I've been thinking of doing a kind of lightweight low-carb diet - e.g., a small bowl of porridge for breakfast, along with low-carb extras, low-carb lunch and snacks and then some carbs coming in for supper. This will be way easier for me than proper low-carbing, and I am much more likely to actually do this! However, will this half-hearted approach really bring much benefit? Or do I need to begin in a more hardcore way to make it work? Do I need to go through ketosis? Would I do that on a diet outlined above?

I'm also training for a triathlon, so doing quite a lot of exercise. Would there be any problem with starting a low-carb diet whilst doing that? Should I wait till afterwards, when my exercise levels will be somewhat reduced?

Thanks for any advice!

You could look at Primal eating and way of life. A retired Ironman triathlete seems to have set this up; it's similar to Paleo. Marksdailyapple.com is the site.

It sounds like a healthy way of eating, but it's not going to put you in ketosis. I'm not sure why you'd want to be ketosis anyway if you don't want to lose weight? Being in ketosis is also probably not great for triathlon training.

I'm a bit confused about your motivation tbh

Thanks for the advice. I thought that ketosis was an important part of the low-carbing process, and necessary to see the benefits. Is that not right? Is it only necessary if you want significant weight loss? As I say, my main motivation is to improve my health and to increase my energy levels, which are not great.
