Wow, we got to 1000 messages!

Welcome back from the previous thread and welcome to all new!

I have been Paleo since September last year, I started as an ex-vegetarian/vegan, I wanted to give up gluten and I had been doing 5:2/IF, which lead me to Paleo/primal. I am 40, I have 2 kids age 8 and 6. I have no major health issues, but I would like it to stay that way. I have bad skin, which has improved since starting Paleo and my dandruff has disappeared. I have gained some weight since starting Paleo, but I was not overweight before, although I would like to get back on my pre Paleo weight - I just love Paleo mayonnaise too much ;) I still practice IF and I lift weights 2-3 times per week. My family is also Paleo.

I have just come back from a camping weekend where I was not strict Paleo as I was camping with other families and I just didn't want to spend my entire weekend telling my kids "no, you cant have it". I do think that Paleo camping is entirely possible, think tinned fish, nuts, sausages, eggs etc.

giraffe, I just spotted that Giorgia does her own bacon. She illustrates step by step in photos. I do the same step but using my recipe. Without curing/pink salt the meat will not that colour (plus I think she uses bore there). It will be 'greyish' in comparison. The colour doesn't bother as I've been brought up with cooking from scratch, inclusive of the ''catch your meat'' concept. That reminds me that I still haven't found a 'recipe' to purge all those snails that keep attacking my plants!Shock Well...the chickens seem to do a good job!:)

giraffeseatpineapples · 14/02/2014 19:06

Will have a look Smile
Snails have done this once or twice - its not the nicest - go out with a torch at night and pluck them off your plants after rain (that wont be hard) and pick them up and put them in a carrier bag then squash or set free somewhere else.

FavadiCacao · 15/02/2014 09:19

My chickens would love you! :)

giraffeseatpineapples · 15/02/2014 15:04

Yes would be a feast for them you could tip the snails into their hutch/pen!

Had a nice lunch from odds and sods, then made a desert suggested on here once before blending coconut cream (minus the water at bottom) frozen berries and honey - was really nice, middle dd loved it.

FavadiCacao · 15/02/2014 17:58

That's our favourite 'ice-cream' too! ;)

Every week I buy 2 pints of milk so I can offer tea or coffee to friends and every week I throw over a pint of the stuff away; but if I buy a pint mysteriously it's not enough?!! I feel guilty throwing it away, so, on occasions, I stew meat with it-pork or pheasant with milk is a match made in heaven, regardless of not being strict paleo!

Today I was browsing some more of Giorgia's recipes (not always Paleo) and came across this cheese recipe). We don't mind the odd piece of cheese, especially from the local raw cheese farm (multiple awards winner). If any of you enjoy the odd piece of cheese this recipe is to die for. I had to use the juice of a full lemon for just over a pint of milk but...wow! I had no cheese cloth, so I used an tea-towel and I added some garlic and chives, when it was lovely on its own. Unable to stop eating the cream cheese with a tea-spoon, dh asked for some [[http://www.elanaspantry.com/rosemary-crackers/ paleo crackers...How can I refuse the puppy eyes! :)

FavadiCacao · 15/02/2014 18:02

I'm so sorry, let's try again.Sad

cheese recipe

crackers recipe

giraffeseatpineapples · 18/02/2014 18:11

milk is funny like that fav, a bit like pasta always too much or too little Grin milk works well in bolognaise sauce too, but I never know if that means it can't be reheated/ frozen etc?

Would like to try the cracker recipe, which website do you get flours etc for baking? Have ssen ocado now does coconut flour so I might try ordering from them unless anyone can reccomend somewhere?

Made parsnip hash brown / fritter things yesterday, they were nice but a bit bland, prob needed salt or spices. We had them with lamb steaks roasted with peppers and celery. I can't believe we didn't eat lamb before it is so yum and my older two will eat lamb where they wont eat beef steaks - so, a result! The children had raw veg; my children are so weird - the roasted peppers with the lamb juice was delicious but they wouldn't even try it (they don't even like roast potatoes).

Not been in the mood for cooking today have been a bit snacky (almond butter off the spoon) and drinking too much tea with milk. Planning to cut milk out again for a bit soon.

FavadiCacao · 18/02/2014 20:10

You can both re-heat and freeze anything with milk. :) I've been taught to use milk as a tenderiser, like other acids (lemon, lime, kiwi, wine...) and I'm now learning whey it's even better.

Re: flours. Sainsbury's has an organic almond flour/ground which needs blitzing again at the same price as the cheapest ground almond on the net, sometimes. Buywholefoodsonline have also been brilliant (super quick delivery) for more specialist flours.

Re:lamb. I was told it was bad for me as it's too fatty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT the sausages I make: I'm always looking for extra fat so they're not too dry! Confused

SHHHHH! Nobody is supposed to know about the almond/coconut butter off the spoon! ;)

giraffeseatpineapples · 19/02/2014 00:39

We go through a lot of spoons in our house Grin

Thanks for all that info Favadi - i shop in sainburys a lot so will look out for the almonds. I am def learning more about cooking with this woe.

I like to think of lamb as 'juicy' Grin.

Waves

Hello all, just discovered this thread on active convos and thought I'd pop in to say hi! I've been Primal / paleo since 2012 and wouldn't change bad to previous crappy diet for all the money in the world. I'm mid thirties now; found the jeans I loved in my mid teens in mother's loft today and - lo! I still fit them. Had the revelation that it's all down to this lifestyle. I'm going to watch this thread so may say hello from time to time - hope that's OK!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 19/02/2014 07:35

Hello heroine, I wouldn't go back to a SAD diet either, even if you paid me (for the health benefits alone) although having lost 6stones I seem to have stalled for the past few months and have stabilised at around 20lbs too heavy... I guess I need to tweak portion sizes a little. No chance of me fitting into any teenage jeans!

Haha, yes the spoons... I do like a nut butter "lolly" ie lick it off the spoon straight from the jar! And the coconut oil...

Actually both those things are probably related to my stalling Blush!

giraffeseatpineapples · 19/02/2014 21:07

British version of SAD is SBD (silent but deadly ... lets just say thats a good description of me when I eat bread!)

giraffeseatpineapples · 19/02/2014 21:19

Sorry posted to early, hi heroine (waves)

Annoying about weight stalling Raw, would it be worth adding in 16:8? I have been thinking about doing chris kressers 30 day paleo reset. he seems to reccomend around 50 g of carbs a day for weightloss/ people with blood sugar issues (seems quite a lot
but then it is pretty restrictive in other ways)

RawCoconutMacaroon · 19/02/2014 22:31

I am toying with the idea of adding in 5:2 for a time... But probably I just need to go very low carb and "reset" my self.

On the one hand, stalling is not great but on the other hand maintaining the health benefits already gained, and the weight already lost is a big success - I just need to refocus!

giraffeseatpineapples · 19/02/2014 22:53

There are some amazing 5:2 successes, it def works quickly for some people. I do wonder if it is more suitable post menapause when calorie and hormone needs change? You will be starting from the position of an already healthy diet though which Mark Sissons seems to reccomend. Actually that might be why 5:2 didn't work well for me because i didn't start eating more healthily which is normally what happens when I go on a diet. In fact I think I often ended up eating low fat soups, ready meals and yog on fast days, which isn't really necessary.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 20/02/2014 07:57

Yes that's why I'm only toying with the idea of 5:2, I'm mid 40's with a toddler and no sign of menopause as yet. I've read a bit about the possibly negative effects (hormonally) on younger women. As a diet it seems to work better for men and post menopause women.

Yesterday I had a much lower amount of carbs (about 20g) and feel quite hungry this morning which kind of says "carb creep" has been getting the better of me (about 50-70g seems to be best for me and it doesn't take many "extra tastes" of something to exceed that! I have probably been nudging towards 100g on too many days lately (and I really can't cope with that amount regularly).

SO, a carb reboot it is, I'm going to read up on that, and give myself a kick up the arse!

FavadiCacao · 20/02/2014 10:30

Raw, what a fabulous weight loss. :)

In previous plateaus I've tried to lower carbs without success but increasing the carbs for a while and then dropping them back to the 50-80g got the weight shifting again. This article from Mark's about carb refeeds to overcome stalling might interest you.

Welcome aboard heroine. :)

RawCoconutMacaroon · 20/02/2014 15:04

That's interesting stuff Favadi, thanks for linking Smile.

HeroineChick · 21/02/2014 00:11

Hee. SBD definitely applied to me; I'm gluten intolerant (found that out before going Primal). It wasn't fun for DH before that revelation.

I do practise intermittent fasting but with little structure to it. I.e, some days I'll just have a coffee and then water until an evening meal, other days I'm ravenous and will have meat, eggs and veg for breakfast!

I love thedailyapple.com. I'm also a long-time mner (name-changed last year); so this thread really does combine two of my very favourite things Grin

giraffeseatpineapples · 22/02/2014 17:03

That's kind of what I do heroine, been feeling a bit rubbish lately and haven't wanted to fast so haven't! Apparently its good to have coconut oil and mct oil (?) during fasts so I might try that at some point.

Interesting about carbs fav and raw, fourarms on the bootcamp section has a thread on carb reloads and the interesting thing is it seems to work for her with 'healthy' carbs like potatoes and rice but not for someone else who tried with junk food.

I haven't eaten well this weekend and feel sick. My dc stayed at my mums yest eve so we watched a movie and had chinese meal deal, fizzy wine and cake from waitrose, so I wouldn't have to do proper cooking. It was relaxing at the time at least Smile

giraffeseatpineapples · 22/02/2014 17:21

Oh I was in superdrug the other day and they have basically rebranded diet bars and slimfast shakes as 5:2 www.superdrug.com/events-2014/lighterlife-fast/page/lighterlife I remember thinking those type of shakes would be good for 5:2 at the time but not actually trying them. Prob with that is some people (like me) won't try any new healthy foods on that woe, it will be shakes one day and biscuits and pizza the next - that is surely going to be a disaster for anyone with blood sugar problems?

HeroineChick · 22/02/2014 18:55

Ah, nothing like a good bandwagon to jump on where the food industry is concerned Grin At the risk of sounding like a nobber early on in joining this thread, I would stay away from anything like that on principle. With the exception of certain products like coconut oil, I work on the basis that real food doesn't need snazzy packaging or adverts. That sounds really preachy, I'm sure - and i suppose ultimately it depends on what you want from paleo / primal / intermittent fasting, but if it's overall health and not just loss of excess poundage then shakes, it's a given that packets and bars aren't the way forward.

HeroineChick · 22/02/2014 18:57

that was supposed to read 'shakes, packets and bars' ...dunno how the shakes snuck in where it did. Hmm

giraffeseatpineapples · 22/02/2014 19:28

Yup def think even if I go off plan sometimes and eat ready meals or whatever, at least overall I am eating more veg and different meats than ever and that can't be a bad thing.

Grin at not sounding like a nobber! I am resisting telling anyone in rl I am trying to do paleo or avoid grains as that can sound nobtastic in itself.
