Summer 25 Boot Camp Week 3: on to Boot Camp Light (if you want)

prettybird · 18/08/2025 08:27

Good Morning all Smile.

Two weeks in and if we want this week we can add back into our diet fruit, nuts and seeds, chocolate and alcohol, by moving to Bootcamp Light.

HOWEVER!

All of the above in moderation.

Fruit - keep the focus on berries, and don't go mad by having lots of them regularly. As with veg, there's a carb counter on the spreadsheet which you can use - just look at how few fruits are in the green section Hmm!

Nuts/seeds - there's a carb counter for nuts on the spreadsheet too. Again, go easy. While they're very good for us, they can get carby very quickly as they're so moreish. Macademia nuts are good, cashew nuts are very high Shock

Chocolate - aim for a minimum of 70% cocoa. You'll be surprised - if you've been avoiding sweet things for a while - at how easy it is to enjoy higher cocoa content chocolate. It's also actually good for us too. Lindt make a good 90% chocolate, which I like the taste and “snap” of, but according to BIWI Sainsbury's sell a good one, in their Taste the Difference range, which is a Ugandan one - https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-ugandan-90-dark-chocolate-taste-the-difference-100g - which I need Wink to try. 2 squares of this is very satisfying.

Alcohol - be very careful here. Partly because you'll find it has more of an effect on you if you're not eating carbs, and partly because once you start drinking you'll suddenly find yourself easily able to justify those crisps! But mainly because a) there can be a lot of carbs in it; b) all the time you're drinking alcohol, this is the source of fuel that your body will be using, rather than fat and c) even if you choose a spirit which has no carbs in it, chances are you'll be drinking it with an artificially sweetened mixer - and remember we're trying to avoid the artificial sweeteners.

So it's up to you - you can move to Bootcamp Light if you wish. Or, if you prefer, you can stay on Bootcamp 'full-on'. If you do that, please make sure you're adhering to rule no 4, which is that most of your carbs should be coming from vegetables and salad. This means you're getting proper nutrition (and fibre!) from your diet.

As an alternative, which might help those of you who are feeling a bit restricted, you could do full-on Bootcamp during the week, and relax into Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

There is a big caveat coming here though!
You also need to know/remember that weeks 3 and 4 are notorious for seeing weight loss slow or stop. Sometimes you may even see a slight gain, even if you are following the rules to the letter. This is quite normal, so don't panic. Just make sure that you are following the rules (don't forget the water!), and KOKO.

Hopefully you’re starting to see good results while not feeling hungry and keeping full of energy. Keep drinking all the water Grin

Morning!

CherryogDog · 18/08/2025 09:51

Morning everyone, and thanks @prettybird for the new thread.
I've been a bit naughty this weekend due to lack of food preparation, in my defence my plans were scuppered by other people wasting my time, which led to me being very "hangry"
I've been very out of sorts mentally and physically lately, the hot weather hasn't helped.
i woke up Saturday in a good mood, with energy, planning to batch cook etc, by Saturday night I was in a foul mood and didn't feel like prepping food so put a ready meal in the oven while I walked the dogs.
Then Sunday had a miscommunication with DP about what time we were going shopping and ended up buying a sandwich while we were out.
But I did practice portion control, and resisted sweet things.
No need to hit me with the big stick, I've already self flagellated (whilst fantasising about beating people who waste my time). 😄

venusandmars · 18/08/2025 09:57

I've stayed the same this week, that's a disappointment since I was half a pound lower during the week. But will keep on, and keep on with the water.

dh brought home some foraged chanterelles so although I ofter don't have anything to eat until 11am, this morning we had bacon, eggs and mushrooms. A lovely start to week 3 of bootcamp.

prettybird · 18/08/2025 14:05

Just posted my own weigh-in this week - down 1.5lb to 11st 11.75lb Smile Only 2lb to go to my next interim target, which is to be under 11st 10lb Grin

We leave for South Africa a month today, so I’d like to be at least under 11.5 st by then so I do need to continue to be focussed Wink

Had a look at some of the other weights that have been posted - some good losses there. Fantastic SmileFlowersStar

For those of you who’ve maybe not seen the results that they wanted/hoped/expected - KOKO. Remember also to notice the NSVs: do you have more energy? Are you sleeping better? Is your skin better? Are you stopping craving sweet things all the time? Are your clothes more comfortable/looser? Remember that success comes in many different forms Smile

I'm down 2lbs, despite my awful weekend!

averywittyusername · 18/08/2025 18:32

Thanks @prettybird for the new thread and the reminder that the weight loss might slow down this week! I'm moving to bootcamp light, but no alcohol, and very mindful eating. Still feeling good & positive! I got Tom Kerridges Dopamine Diet book.. some lovely recipes for inspiration.

prettybird · 18/08/2025 18:53

@averywittyusername- I have it too Smile

Some of the recipes are good, others I think are unnecessarily complicated Hmm But as you say, good for inspiration. I like his flatbreads Smile And I used his courgette based lasagne as inspiration for my own variation of my mum’s recipe (which already just used various cheeses and beaten egg rather than a white sauce).

Morning all. A good start to the week for me. Planning to go light on the weekends. Well done to everyone for the progress.

Perimenofullhalt · 19/08/2025 07:29

I was late starting so I'll definitely be steering clear of wine and chocolate for a bit longer. I'm sleeping much better without the alcohol anyway, and I'm sure it's the prime cause of evening munchies too.

KOKO. Ordered some nice cheese instead of wine.

I have the Tom Kerridge book but haven't used it much, I'll look for that lasagne recipe though @prettybird , thanks, as you've reminded me that it's ages since I've made any sort of lasagne and it's always popular with my household.

averywittyusername · 19/08/2025 07:30

Great, thanks for the tip on the flatbread! I'm going to try the crispy vinegar pork with cauliflower purée, probably tomorrow as I've got yoga class tonight.

Speaking of purée, I make a lovely swede or cauliflower puree simply by boiling the veg, adding Philadelphia-type cream cheese, salt & pepper, mixing with the stick blender. It is gorgeous 😋 (simple than Tom's recipe!).

prettybird · 19/08/2025 08:01

@Perimenofullhalt- my own lasagne recipe is on the Low-carb recipe thread Smile

This was it before going into the oven a few weeks ago. The smaller one is a veggie version for ds’ girlfriend (just tomato sauce based and with half pasta sheets and half courgette slices as an experiment - she liked both). The big one was 2/3 normal pasta lasagne sheets (for dh and ds) and 1/3 courgette slices.

@prettybird now I really am in for the big stick, I've messed up the spreadsheet 🫣.
Couldn't do it on my laptop because of my ad blocker, tried on my phone, put the value in the wrong cell and couldn't rectify it, so sorry!

I'm sticking mostly to strict bootcamp because I don't have much to lose and I have tight margins. But I will make a batch of cheese and almond muffins - they fill my carby bread desire. I have them with soup if dh is having bread and butter, and I occasionaly have them for breakfast with butter AND peanut butter! (I make them in a mini-muffin tin so over all it's not too calorific but it is utterly indulgent.

Evening campers! I’m a bit late around the week 3 campfire. Absolutely astounded at a 4.6lb loss last week - that’s almost 3%. I’m usually dribs and drabs, slowly, slowly so I’m not expecting a change this week. I’m staying on full bootcamp to maximise chances of some loss.
Lunch - salad with mixed leaves, cucumber, radish, tomatoes, cold roast chicken, mayo & Parmesan.
Dinner - steak with leftover squash & corn, aubergines, courgettes & peppers. (I know squash and corn not ideal but we’ve so much left after a family bbq yesterday and I did it with a very simple but delicious apple cider vinegar & olive oil dressing - it’s really delish)

Ive a supermarket delivery on Thursday but need some inspiration…

NotDonna · 19/08/2025 23:42

I don’t think I can search the recipe thread can I? I can only scroll through?

NotDonna · 19/08/2025 23:44

Errrr… where are the bootcamp recipe threads gone please?

Thank you! I’m looking for fish options. Also how do you make celeriac fries without them being mushy please?

NotDonna · 20/08/2025 08:08

I found the fish recipes! But celeriac fries are still a mystery.

Been feeling a tad sorry for myself over the weekend, a bit sneez-y and sore throat-y with glands up on Sunday morning, mainlining no-sugar throat sweets and ginger tea.

Perhaps exactly because of the no-sugar sweets, I felt ravenous all weekend, ate more than usual to my unusual appetite, had a tipple at night to, frankly, help me feel better. I was not so very surprised to be up a pounds and a bit this week, overall still waaay down on my pre bootcamp state.

I try not to focus too much on the actual number, confident that if I keep to the rules, overall the trend will be downwards.

I’ve postponed posting until today when I’m feeling better again. Much of the cross & sorry for myself feeling was because pre-bootcamp, it was nothing unusual for me to have a permanently runny nose and a post nasal drip cough.

Having been ‘good’ and sticking to the programme, I felt as if I didn’t deserve to have any cold symptoms. Now I feel better, of course, and realise I am still reaping the benefits of eating LCHF, ive shaken whatever it was off in a few days rather than weeks or even years.

Always glad of the company here, thank you lovely bootcampers

BIWI · 20/08/2025 20:49

@NotDonna the low carb recipes have their own topic now!

Here it is!

Re celeriac chips, I find that they do take a long time to cook. Cut them into chips and put into a baking dish with olive oil, salt and pepper (don’t blanch them first), and then bake for at least 40 minutes. They’ll never go properly crispy, but they will develop a lovely sort-of chewy texture.
