We're starting the next challenge (Lose Half a Stone Before Christmas) on Monday, but not every one will want to take part in that - so I thought it would be a good idea to have a general, non-challenge-specific thread for other chat.

So post your questions, thoughts, meals and anything else here!

Sorry BIWI, I thought when I posted my meandering comments on the other thread this morning that perhaps I shouldn't be doing that on the sign-up threadBlush.
I always seem to be better at talking about low-carbing than I am at the actual low-carbingGrin
Thank you for the general chat thread.

NotAHoot · 11/11/2023 09:39

Hello

I missed the start of the challenge thread but I'm starting tomorrow, so this chat thread is great - thank you Smile

BIWI · 11/11/2023 10:23

If you're on the pre-Christmas thread, you can meander around as much as you like @GoodOldEmmaNess Grin

I just thought it would be useful to have a separate thread for those not taking part.

I'm on both! You never know where you'll get some inspiration!

There was, recently, yet another story in the media about the 'dangers' of red meat - this time, associating it with diabetes. I couldn't understand why that would be, given that meat doesn't - as far as I know/understand - cause a spike in blood sugar.

Anyway, Nina Teicholz has written an interesting response to the story, which is worth a read.

I hope this link works!

Hello all! Looking forward to starting this morning, I did a big shop yesterday (DH now muttering that "There's nothing to eat, just ingredients!") and cleared out the fridge of anything carby.

My stupid scale has run out of batteries so I can't weigh in as yet (rrrr) but I'm off to start drinking water - this is going to be my biggest struggle as I work in a school and can't feasibly run to the loo every 5 minutes - which I need to while my bladder adjusts! It's going to be interesting...

Good luck everyone!

Lovecat · 13/11/2023 06:37

So of course having posted that I've found a spare battery and... Oh Lord, I'm the fattest I've ever been!

Onwards and upwards...

The red meat thing will just not go away!
I watch this keto doctor and he analyses all the news stories as they come out, I like it as a reminder why to low carb.

Dr. Westman Reacts: 9 nutrition studies every ketogenic dieter needs to read

The “diet wars” can get quite contentious. Even politics seems to be a safer topic for respectful conversation compared to talking about nutrition! Since the...

One of the most irritating things about the whole 'red meat' thing, is the insistence by those who write these reports/conduct these studies, that processed meat should be included along with raw/unprocessed meat.

OP posts:
Unabletomitigate · 13/11/2023 08:39

Yes, I know what you mean. They categorise a pizza as a meat product on the basis that it might have meat toppings.
If you have time watch one of Belinda Fettkes videos. She "exposes" the hidden agenda behind a lot of the pro veggi research, spoiler alert its a combination of vested interets from food companies and the Seventh Day Adventists. You could not make this up!

Harvard is a huge name in terms of nutritional research, and they have a huge institutional bias towards vegetarianism. It's shocking. Also worth a watch is Harcombe analysing the basis of US and or Uk nutritional guidleines. Basically there is no scientific basis. Which would funny if it were not causing the huge increase in our so called lifestyle diseases, which will collapse the NHS and possibly western civilisation.
Too far?

An interesting email today from Zoe Harcombe - she's running a 14 day 'back to basics' plan, starting on 1 January, and it's absolutely free to join.

Sign up is here

It's sort-of low carb, although the Harcombe Diet has its own phases (and from memory, some of it is anti-candida, although I could be wrong), but if anyone is feeling the need for something strict/accountable it might be worth looking at.

Hi all, I posted this in the fasting group too but I need some advice! Sorry to the people who have seen this twice, I know it’s bad form!

I am currently 13 st 5lb and I don’t lose weight easily. I eat no processed food or sugar at all (which is easy for me as I am coeliac and gluten free food is full of awful ingredients and I never eat out as I get really ill from any cross contamination).

I only drink green and soursop tea.

I do a 48 hour fast once a month, and a 72 hour once every few months - don’t drop an ounce. I do omad.

On a day to day basis, I’ll have a fresh celery and carrot juice, a pot of full fat greek yogurt with flaxseeds, a pile of brussel sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli roasted in coconut oil, some form of protein (steak/chicken/fish/ occasionally lentils). I also have a shot of olive oil with turmeric, cayenne and lemon. That’s all carbs kept to under 20.

It’s about 1,100 calories.

No deviation and no carbs aside from when I have lentils (maybe once or twice at the end of the month when money has run out), and the carbs in veg as the Gf ones are awful so I stear clear anyway.

A month of that everyday has seen me lose ….. jack shit. The month before, I lost 1b. The months before that the same and on and on.

And no, I am not exercising heaps and building muscle. Just walking when I can.

Any ideas?

I see a nutritionist yearly for coeliac bloods, she just says, “well, it’s easy not to count the odd couple of biscuits or cake isn’t it, we all do it!” I haven’t eaten a biscuit or cake in 3 years. When I said that, she just looked at me blankly and then said I should all in some whole meal bread and cereals 😖

This isn’t a diet for me, it’s my life (family history of some quite awful things, I am currently under genetics so I want to eat certain things to cut my risk), but I do need to lose weight. BMI currently 33, so it’s not like I am not losing as I am a healthy weight.

BIWI · 15/12/2023 13:47

Apart from the yothurt, there's no mention of any fat in your diet @Notafanofchristmas - and it looks like your protein choices are all low fat too. A low carb diet should be a high fat one.

Are you drinking much water?

I drink a table spoon of olive oil with turmeric and cayenne every morning, I add a tablespoon of olive oil to carrot and celery juice as it helps absorb the fat soluble vitamins.

I also add a tablespoon of flaxseeds to my yogurt.

I roast my veg in lots of coconut oil. I chose fattier cuts of meat, steak, chicken thigh and salmon and have it with grass fed butter. Even when I have the lentils it’s daal cooked with ghee.

I must be at 3.5 - 4 litres of liquid a day. 6 huge cups of green and soursop tea (they are like tankards!) and a 2 litre jug of water.

Notafanofchristmas · 15/12/2023 14:27

My husband eats the same as me. Exact same. 4 stone gone this year and now he’s at a healthy weight!

Notafanofchristmas · 15/12/2023 14:57

I mean, don’t get me wrong, the health benefits have been enormous. I had high bp. Dr wanted me on medication, I said no, now BP is normal.

I was pre diabetic. Not any more.

I had acne. Completely gone.

BIWI · 15/12/2023 15:26

It's so annoying when men lose more/more quickly, isn't it?!

I don't really know what else to advise re weight loss, but I wonder if @StuntNun might be able to help you? (Sending up the bat signal for her)

At least you can draw comfort from knowing that there are other, pretty major, health benefits of eating like this.

OP posts:
StuntNun · 15/12/2023 17:32

Its very frustrating but also very common @Notafanofchristmas for men to effectively lose weight on a diet that doesn't work for their partners, even when they aren't being strict about it. It's simply easier for men to lose weight. I'm curious where you found the advice for your current diet because it's very different from what we do on the Mumsnet low carb bootcamp that @BIWI designed. It's great that you've seen such obvious health benefits though; that alone must tell you you're doing something right.
