What am I doing wrong/right - @BIWI or someone would love some advise. Not currently losing weight.

Trying to low carb and stick to 16:8 fasting.

At around noon I either have berries ( maybe too many) with ff Greek yoghurt and a sprinkle of sliced Brazil nuts. Or three egg cheese and veg omelette with lettuce, cucumber, red pepper, celery.

Early evening I have supper with family. Tonight was sausages and I had three, with onions and a pile of greens (broccoli and green beans). Yesterday I had aubergine and courgette stew (ratatouille) with mozarella, or salmon and stir fry veg.

Often have celery sticks with marmite peanut butter or cream cheese later on.

Drinks - no alcohol, prob not enough water. Tea with milk -2 cups a day. One Coke Zero a day. 3/4 galaxy light hot chocolate a day ( made with water, 38 cals a cup. Is this where I am going wrong?

No other snacks, no junk food, no ham or bacon etc.

Am about 2/3 stone overweight. I am on lots of meds that cause weight gain.

Advice and thoughts welcome, thank you!

Doesn't sound too bad. Not sure about the Galaxy things, what are the carbs in them? Can't be much for 30 odd calories.

What's the issue? Have you lost any weight at all yet? How long have you been doing it?

Spend a couple of days putting every morsel into my fitness pal and have a look at the calories and carbs.

It's more than I would eat on a low carb weight loss diet but everyone is different.

lots33 · 25/07/2021 21:35

Thanks. Can I ask what you would eat in a typical day?

Just checked galaxy carbs are 5.3 per drink which may be an issue!

Started a couple of months ago, initially lost weight but then stalled which timed with my new meds being increased significantly. I have heard some people have gained 5 stone on these meds but I need them.

Yeah if you're having 4 or them a day that's practically all your carbs anyway

I'm actively losing at the moment so my diet is a Huel black shake (1 scoop with almond milk) at 3pm then a light meal of mostly veg with good fats at about 7pm. Maybe a glass of wine. Some Diet Coke and water and coffee whenever I fancy it.

I like the Huel cos it's not food and I don't pick at other stuff. It also really fills me up.

The thing with low carb is over time it should depress your appetite so you can achieve quite a decent calorie deficit without feeling shit.

I would say that you need to analyse your eating and see where the hidden carbs are. Yoghurt, berries, nuts, sausages, onions, hot chocolate etc all have carbs in and sounds like your low carb is not really that low at the moment.

How about the omelette for lunch and then a salmon fillet with loads of green veg for dinner? That would be a very low carb day

Thanks that’s really helpful. Time to pull up my big girls pants and work on my will power! Will have a look at Huel too.

@lots33 my two pennyworth!

At around noon I either have berries ( maybe too many) with ff Greek yoghurt and a sprinkle of sliced Brazil nuts. Or three egg cheese and veg omelette with lettuce, cucumber, red pepper, celery

The omelette is perfect low carb food - hopefully you're also making it with plenty of butter, to get your fats up? Equally, the yoghurt is great - but be very careful with the berries and nuts. If you're not losing, this is something I'd look to cut down/out. You haven't said which berries, and again this is something to be aware of. Blueberries are much carbier than raspberries, for eample.

Early evening I have supper with family. Tonight was sausages and I had three, with onions and a pile of greens (broccoli and green beans)

Did you check the carb count of the sausages? They vary hugely!. If you're buying good quality/high meat content ones, the carb counts will be lower, but if you're buying ordinary sausages, they contain a lot of filling, like rusk, which makes them very carby. You could also cut down the carbs by using shallots instead of onions. (Buy the echalion/banana shallots as they're a lot easier to peel)

Yesterday I had aubergine and courgette stew (ratatouille) with mozarella, or salmon and stir fry veg

This sounds perfect but, again, I hope you used plenty of oil to fry the veg in first? Stir fries are often pretty low fat, so once they're cooked a good tip is to dress them with sesame oil.

Often have celery sticks with marmite peanut butter or cream cheese later on

This is OK - just watch the peanut butter as, again, different brands vary hugely in terms of their carb count.

Drinks - no alcohol, prob not enough water. Tea with milk -2 cups a day. One Coke Zero a day. 3/4 galaxy light hot chocolate a day ( made with water, 38 cals a cup. Is this where I am going wrong?

Definitely cut out the Galaxy! It's not about the calories (generally a much lesser issue if you're low carbing), but that will be adding a lot of carbs that you simply don't need.

No other snacks, no junk food, no ham or bacon etc

Great! You shouldn't need to snack anyway on a low carb diet, as one of its benefits is appetite suppression.

Am about 2/3 stone overweight. I am on lots of meds that cause weight gain

Medications can impede weight loss - but obviously you need those! So it's important to stay as focused as you can on the diet you're following. Have you had a look at the Low Carb Bootcamp rules? That might help you - and you're more than welcome to join us on the current chat thread - we're between Bootcamps right now, but the next one is starting very soon, so why don't you join us there? It's a short one, 6 weeks, but the chat threads continue all the time anyway!

Hope this helps.

Thanks BIWI, so helpful.

Can’t believe shallots are less carby then onions.

Usually have half to three quarters of a £2 punnet of strawbs but will knock those on the head.

Sausages were 3.7 g for two, I ate three.

Thanks to both of you, much to work on!

Yep - onions are 7.9g carbs per 100g whereas shallots are only 3.3g.

Your actual diet sounds OK but all the "sugary" drinks won't be helping at all
