Polyols

I have been looking for a chocolate that I can have as a treat while low carbing. Chocologic Dark had 18g of carbs per 100g, and it says of which polyols 8.7g. I read somewhere that you shouldn't count polyols towards your carbs. Is that correct? Thanks

Better watch out as polyols can cause laxative effects

Yes polyps are indigestible so they go straight through you. Good for low carb but can cause digestive issues.

@Florabella you'd be far better off buying 'normal' dark chocolate, with as high a cocoa content as you can get. Initially you might find it a little bitter, but when you've low carbed for a while, suddenly it will taste sweet enough for you!

My favourite is Lindt 90%, which is 14g carbs per 100g. A whole bar is 100g, broken into 10 squares, so only 1.4g per square. 2 squares makes the perfect treat.

raises hand as somebody who can't take much of a dose of polyols and recommends a modest amount of dark chocolate instead. (This is a euphemism - my reaction to polyols would trigger concerns about a collapsed sewer line somewhere in the vicinity.)

If I need a quantity, I resort to this Magic Chocolate Bar recipe:

60g (1/2 cup) dark cocoa powder (fat content up to you but definitely not drinking chocolate)

240ml (1 cup) unsweetened almond milk

0 calorie sweetener (to taste)

Optional add ins: chopped nuts, flavour extract etc

Mix ingredients in a small pot over medium-low heat until it thickens. Pour into a shallow container and freeze until solid. Eat straight out of the freezer.

Nutrition will vary with your cocoa but can be very low carb/calorie.
