Low carb AND low FODMAP doable??

I'm 2 days into low carb boot camp (am following the Jan week 1 thread so behind but with you if you know what I mean!)

I've been told by GP to try a low FODMAP diet and it's really hard to get a fixed list of what this actually means!! I've done loads of reading and the biggest confusion I have is over yoghurt l, cheese and cream which are obviously stalwarts of boot camp.

I think I'm ok to have small amounts of them for FODMAP as the problematic 'things' eg fructose / lactose are also carb related so a lot of low carb = low fodmap.

It does however rule out some other great options eg mushrooms / leeks / cauliflower and I am very confused about broccoli Grin

Anyone else in this boat who can give me some advice??

Why has he advised FODMAP?

BIWI · 24/02/2021 15:40

Sorry - could be she! Guilty of sexist assumption there Blush

Correct though Smile

Bloating that can't be attributed to anything else basically. Blood tests all ok, no other symptoms of note so he's exploring IBS.

I've cut out gluten and dairy for a month already - didn't make a noticeable difference to bloating but general digestion was better I think.

I am trying boot camp a) to lose a bit of belly fat so I can definitely tell what is bloating and b) see if it might 'reset' me in general..

So far I've worked through the boot camp rules and had to remove a few key players eg cauliflower as was a big red no for fodmap but I'm really confused about yoghurt / cream!

I'm not a medic, but are you more bloated when you eat certain foods? I'm not great with nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, chillies, cayenne, paprika for example). I will say that bootcamp has made a really positive difference to my gut health generally!

FusionChefGeoff · 24/02/2021 21:21

I've been trying to spot patterns and failing so far!!

I was an IBS sufferer @FusionChefGeoff, and after I'd been low carbing for a while suddenly realised that all of my symptoms had gone. I hadn't started it for that reason but it's a massive benefit.

Lots of other Bootcampers have reported the same - along with the loss of a whole other raft of symptoms.

Give it a whirl and see what happens. I don't think (I hope) your GP would object to it as it can only help you - and as you don't have a specific diagnosis it's not like FODMAP would be a compulsory treatment!

BIWI · 25/02/2021 10:18

The other thing I'd suggest is that you read up about the gut biome - Michael Mosley writes about it . That might be helpful too. (Disclaimer: I'm not a medic at all!)

FusionChefGeoff · 25/02/2021 19:44

That's basically what I've decided to do - give boot camp a go first (keeping an eye on what happens with the fodmap foods but not cutting them out) and if no improvement by April then I will cut out fodmap food but maybe relax the low carb rules to give me more variety / options!

I've started taking bacteria tablets (can't remember the name - Afomidullus or something) plus hoping the yoghurt might help too

I have to follow FODMAP and am also on the bootcamp thread with BIWI and others.

I find it very easy to do both, come and join us, I think you can do both.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/02/2021 22:34

Oh hooray!!! Yes I'm on the Bootcamp thread now - will keep my eyes out for you @NotwatchingSpooks
