Hi, I’m looking at starting low carb / keto, but I have a lot of weight to lose (7-8 stones) and was wondering if anyone who had a similar amount of weight to lose could let me know how they found it? Any tips gratefully accepted, I have no idea where to start!
I’m going to make a shopping list and do an online order tonight, I have enough to make do until then I think, so can start the morning with eggs....

Bumping this for you.

I have done keto. Started ten years ago with 3 months on what was then called the Cambridge diet. I went from 16st to just under 13st. In that time I read up on Ketogenic eating and went back to real food instead of shakes. I eventually got down to 11st which I am happy with. My best tip is to drink water. The first five days may be hard going but stick at it. Make sure you have satisfying food that you enjoy.
If you use Reddit definitely take a look at the keto subreddits, there are several. /Ketorecipes is one I like but just reading about other people's success on /keto is very motivating. I tend to stick to low carb these days. I recently did three months on Second Nature as I found myself slipping into old habits. It was really good and has reset me.
Good luck. You will be so happy this time next week when you are weighing yourself! I'm expecting an update from you 🙂

Hi tickettocrazytown
Just returning here myself. Dietdoctor.com has lots of free keto recipes and resources if you want to try it out rather than subscribe. Good luck!

We're currently in Week 6 of Boot Camp but people are jumping in all the time, so not everyone is at the same stage. If you go to the current Boot Camp thread, the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness that is linked to in the OP has loads of resources. There is also loads of support within the threads - both emotional and explanatory.

(NB: the last few weeks, there were some problems with the spreadsheet, so the link in the OP might not work and you need to scroll down to find the working link).

I haven't had to lose the amount of weight you say you want/need to lose, but I've lost over 3 stone and have about a stone and half to go. It's not been linear - I've had a few ups and downs - but I've never gone anywhere near back to the weight I started at.

Boot Camp is not strictly Keto - it's a High Fat Low Carb Way of Eating (NB: not NO carb). Lots of great food - especially after the first time 2 strict weeks.

I started eating low carb 3rd March 2019 just before lockdown. I weighed 14 st 7 lbs. By 3rd September 2019 I weighed 9stone 7 lbs, which is less than I have weighed since my late teens and certainly since before I had my first child 30 odd years ago.

My low carb diet wasn't really driven by weight, but because I had received a diagnosis of fatty liver disease and pre diabetes in December which had prompted me to give up sugar.

I already had health issues - a chest infection 7 years ago led to a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism which subsequently turned out to be a symptom of Graves thyrotoxicosis, an auto immune disease. It was only when this was finally controlled by symptoms persisted that investigations revealed ME/CFS and IBS and I also have COPD. I suffered constant nausea, aching joints, swelling of my ankles and increasing breathlessness, exhaustion, loss of upper body strength, and extreme fatigue and I averaged about 14 - 18 hours sleep daily with any exertion just tiring me completely.

Within 6 weeks of giving up sugar, the nausea disappeared and I was feeling just generally better. By the time I had lost half a stone in weight, my symptoms were improving, and I was less breathless and could walk a few hundred yards with ease. I am happy to say that over the course of the diet, I became increasingly less tired, had bags of energy and even my breathing improved ( my spirometry show increased lung function compared with last year which is surprising given the degenerative nature of COPD).

My advice would be to go for it.... The weight loss for me is the icing on the cake.. The cake is having my health back and being a participant in life rather than just watching from the sidelines ..

That is inspiring ihaveavoice - well done on taking back your life!

OP I've lost 40lb on this way of eating so far (probably 20 to go) and find it makes me feel better.

If you have a long way to go, this way of eating is better than other dieting because it leaves you satisfied rather than longing to eat or feeling that your will-power is being stretched to breaking point. (Will power is a short-term thing!)

A re-set seemed to take place once I got started on LCHF eating, and it actually became easier to do as I went on. It seems that for me, sugar-cravings are built on the consumption of sugar!

I've had a break and a carb-feast over Christmas (after a year on this way of eating) and tried all the things I thought I missed. They weren't all as good as remembered and won't tempt me much in future. (I still love my mother's Christmas cake... but that is all gone until next year.)

It was fun... but I feel better on normal (LCHF) eating and am happy to return to it for the months ahead.

Looking forwards to bootcamp... I'm already following its rules this week.

Chailatteplease · 07/01/2021 18:30

@ihaveavoice did you recover from the CFS/ME? If so, how? I have it too and would absolutely love to get my life back.

Chailatteplease · 07/01/2021 18:43

@ihaveavoice sorry just read your post again and saw you said you gradually felt better with the diet. Thankyou for sharing your incredible story, I have a lot of the same health issues (ME aside) and was mainly doing this for weight loss for my wedding. But being well again will top that, I’m very excited now Smile
