Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - which way will you go?

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet

So a few mixed results so far. Hopefully there will be some more good ones on the spreadsheet!

I suspect that what a lot of you are coming to realise is that this isn't a way of eating that can allow you to cheat or even to take your eye off the ball.

In this initial phase, while we're aiming to become fat-adapted, it's really important that you keep your carbs as low as you can (within sensible limits - this is not a a zero carb diet - you should be eating enough veg and salad to get good nutrition, which will mean you're eating carbs)

I know that sometimes it's impossible. I'm in a situation where tonight I'm being cooked for, by people who have no idea I'm low carbing, and who haven't asked if there's anything I can/can't eat - so I'll just have to accept it. But whilst it's within your control, you really do need to stay strong.

Now.

This is the start of the infamous week 3 (and next week, week 4) - and it's very, very, VERY common for weight loss to stop - or sometimes even for people to gain slightly, even if they're following the rules.

So. You can decide to stay on Bootcamp if you want to, to help deal with this, or you could move onto Bootcamp Light, which means you can start to add some fruit, some nuts and seeds and some alcohol back into your diet.

The operative word is 'some'! All in moderation - and not at every meal, every day - because this will mean that you won't see the weight loss you want to.

There are three options:

  • stay on Bootcamp
  • move to Bootcamp Light
  • choose a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week, Bootcamp Light at the weekend

Whatever you choose, I hope that you have a good, positive and successful week. Flowers

Steak recipe (don't have my recipe book with me as I'm at friends', but this is a rough idea!)

Sprinkle steak with Worcestershire sauce and leave for about 10 minutes. Then sear in a hot pain (with some oil) for a minute on each side. Take out of the pan and leave to go cold.

Boil some cauliflower and broccoli florets till only just tender, and also some green beans, halved. Drain and leave to steam dry.

In a salad bowl, mix the vegetables with some halved cherry tomatoes, the steak, which you have sliced very thinly, and then add a dressing made from olive oil, horseradish, mustard and wine vinegar.

Will post proper quantities later!

Just popping in to say God Bless the person who suggested eating Pate on sliced cheese. I had that for my lunch today, with salad, and it was yummy!

I had bought pate as I thought it would be OK on its own but it wasn't.
But on cheese . . . mmmmmm . . . Smile

Thank you thank you thank you.

Notlostjustexploring · 28/01/2019 18:56

Brassica I'm afraid I can't give you a celeriac Vs swede because I'm not the biggest fan of celeriac because it's absolutely fucking rank

Notlostjustexploring · 28/01/2019 18:58

Is there any type of cheese that works especially well with pate? Would DIY caramelised onions sans sugar etc to go on top be a massive nono....(probably know the answer to that already to be honest)?

wasabiaddiction · 28/01/2019 19:06

I know we are not supposed to actually count carbs.

But ..... how many grams should we be aiming for?

BrassicaBabe · 28/01/2019 19:10

Ooh Balloon that bodes well! I had pate delivered with my shop yesterday too. Smile

ShagMeRiggins · 28/01/2019 19:11

BalloonSlayer I’m gonna stand right up and claim credit for pâté on cheese. Extra Mature Cheddar, if anyone cares. Glad you liked it. There’s no crunch, per se, but less watery and more satisfying than celery sticks. Plus it’s suitably high fat (oh yeah) to be filling after one or two, so no need to over indulge. Wheee!

LazydaysofSummer · 28/01/2019 19:11

Another couple of pounds down this week, which is great. Planning on doing boot camp combo as I'm looking forward to a glass of wine in Feb! Though it will be restricted to a weekend treat, ongoing.
Did go to the gym a lot last week and beginning to actually enjoy it! This week will be trickier though as I'm working away for a couple of days which always messes up my routine. But planning on taking a salad with me for the first day and a few avocados as a fall back option if I'm struggling to find anything LC on day two. Will be home for dinner so can eat something properly then.

LostaraYil · 28/01/2019 19:19

About a pound up this week, but not unexpected due to drinking at the weekend. I'm going to aim to stick to bootcamp proper this week and also try to get some exercise.
B - creamy coffee
L - salad with chorizo
S - cheese
D - creamy chicken with broccoli and mushrooms

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 28/01/2019 19:40

Right. I've done two exercise classes today and drunk loads and loads of water.

B - Two boiled eggs
L - Salad with olives and smoked salmon
D - Bolognese with roasted peppers and cavelo nero.

I'm going to try the tuna burger recipe later on this week, generally I'm not a fan of tinned tuna so hopefully this will make it more palatable.

Mimosa1 · 28/01/2019 19:42

TMI alert! FINALLY had a gigantic poo after being constipated in this woe of a few days. My first thought was excitement about getting in the scale tomorrow! For those who have also been suffering, drinking gallons of water seems to have done the trick.

Batshittery · 28/01/2019 19:57

Hello all.
Thanks for the thread BIWI
I've stayed the same but I know why. I'm going to get into gear this week. koko

VenusStarr · 28/01/2019 20:43

Checking in, am 7lbs down since starting, 5 on bootcamp :) happy with that. I lost 8lb in total last bootcamp so happy that I'm losing. Possibly because I had a higher start weight. I've still got another 7lbs to go to get to my weight this time last year. But not dwelling on that.

Keep it up everyone! :)

venusandmars · 28/01/2019 20:54

hefzi 5% carb sounds very difficult. Today I had avocado, egg, smoked trout, salad, veg curry and that was almost 15% carb. I have in the past made 85% fat, 10% protein, 5% carb but it is all cream, butter, cheese, and not very balanced in terms of green veg, fibre, vitamins etc. OK for 2/3 days to get into keto, but not sustainable.

@1wildheartsease I'm with you on the airport 'stripping off' stuff. I was with a male work colleague recently. I had had to strip to my vest top while he went through with a shirt and jumper. I felt exposed and vulnerable Angry

latebloomingleo · 28/01/2019 21:15

Hello everyone! Checking in...
Lost 2.4lb this week which is an improvement on the 0.3lb last week. I’m quite happy with slow and steady, as long as it continues...

B: FF Greek yogurt and cinnamon
L: Roasted cauliflower and mushroom with blue cheese source (not recommended)
D: Mashed swede with stir-fried bacon, mushrooms and broccoli
S: Coffee and cream

Good luck for the week ahead! KOKO

Katinkka · 28/01/2019 21:38

@notjustexploring you’re right there. My son spat his out and the rest of it went down the waste disposal after I tried it myself. Bloody horrible.

Went for a full body massage today. Was amazing and so relaxing. Walked to uni and back too.

B-Greek yogurt
L-3 eggs as short on time
D-meatloaf and broccoli 🥦

Rshard · 28/01/2019 21:41

Logging today’s food
B - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon
L - hm Greek salad, chicken
D - bacon and halloumi salad, mayo

tootstastic · 28/01/2019 21:45

Hi all, some lovely losses and love the foxy jumper 🦊

I posted my weigh-in on the spreadsheet first thing, but had a mad busy day, so only just sitting down to catch up with the thread.

I lost 2.1 lbs, taking me to a 40.5 lbs loss altogether (4.3 lbs this bootcamp).

Just 1.5 lbs to go to hit 3 stones off, that's the target for next week. Then I've still got a further 89 lbs to lose after that, so I'm resigned to just keep my head down and KOKO until it's all off.

Have a great week everyone!

tootstastic · 28/01/2019 22:12

Grr...thread's just done that thing where you think you've got to the end of it, as it does that buffering symbol, do you post and realise you've missed loads of messages.

So, sorry @ShagMeRiggins, I've only just sported your treadmill suggestion. Thanks for that, I will try that to start with when I finally pluck up the courage to enter the gym bit at the gym (normally just in holistic class studio and self-conscious elsewhere in the gym). And hope you get your mojo back with this WOE. I've been there so many times when I really want to do it, but just can't get my head in the game.

venusandmars · 28/01/2019 22:36

I found a gym that is 2 miles from where I live. I walk there (and back). That gives me my 10,000 steps. Then when I get there I can swim lazily for 30 minutes, go in the steam room, sauna, jacuzzi. Bliss.

chocolateavocado99 · 28/01/2019 23:05

I was down 3 lbs yesterday, (for weigh in) but up one today! HmmBloody scales. I think I should stay away from them.
2 of my favourite skirts are now too big, which is great, but I wear them both at least once a week. Not sure if they are worth getting tailored or not. Will wait another few weeks and see how much I miss them.
I made the fish florentine recipe posted here last night and it was fab. Thanks to whoever shared it.

Dia12 · 29/01/2019 00:03

Hi all, I've been absent for a few days with a hectic schedule at home but have been on track with my eating. Have been so much better in my clothes, although not a drastic change but still everything just feels more comfortable and I'm feeling more confident.
My hunger pangs have subsided and I seem to be able to walk away from cake 😱
And so I was super disappointed when I stepped on the scales and was exactly the same last weigh in 😩

I've checked with ketostix and they are dark purple and my blood ketones are reading 1.2 mmol which means I am in ketosis - but then why aren't I losing weight?

I'm drinking around 2.7l of water, eating low carbs, some snacking and not sleeping very well.

NorthernKnickers · 29/01/2019 06:55

5lb off this week and last so 10lb total. Very happy with that. Quite prepared for the week 3/4 slow down now though (hopefully it's only a slow down and not a complete stall!).

Well done everyone for koko-ing.

StuntNun · 29/01/2019 07:15

Dia have you taken measurements? You might find you have lost inches and the pounds will follow. List out a couple of days meals for us to look at. Why aren't you sleeping well? Poor sleep quality causes an increase in the hormone cortisol which is involved in appetite regulation and can therefore affect weight loss.

Wasabia most people lose weight well on 20-50g carbs per day but don't get into carb counting unless you really need to as it's such a faff.

nowlook · 29/01/2019 07:57

Morning all! That mushroom sauce was delicious, thanks @Mrs1stF!

The Observer is running a series of articles about the best egg recipes (first part was yesterday in the Grauniad). The Moliere omelette caught my eye. Note: article is potentially triggering as includes soldiers.
