Couple of carb related queries

Hi Low carbers.

Day 3 here. Did low carb before (about four years ago) with amazing results.

Two queries....

  1. I've already started with the LC flu. Feel shaky, palpitations, weak and exhausted. Taken some magnesium supplements, drank lots of water and will be having fried mushrooms in a bit with lots of salt. Any other tips? How long did your flu last? I need to go to work tomorrow!!

2.Due to the shaky horrible feeling, I was thinking of having a couple of drinks this evening to help me sleep and calm my system down a bit. I've heard that G&(slimline)T is good. I've just asked my partner to grab me a couple of the Gordon's cans on his way home. I really want to find out how many carbs in them but can't seem to find any info. Anyone know?

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

G& slimline T is grand if it is Swchweps or however you spell it. Fever tree isn't great!

Thanks Pangur.....feel better already :)

If you're on Day 3 and following Low Carb Boot Camp, you shouldn't be having any alcohol Confused

It could be carb flu (although it's a bit early) or it could be, especially if you're having your full water allocation (you are having your full water allocation, aren't you Wink), your electrolytes going out of whack. Try a glass of water with a wee but of salt or Lo-salt (I also put in a squoosh of lemon juice) and see if you feel better.

I'm not really doing the low carb boot camp. Is that a mumsnet thing? Apologies if I've hijacked a boot camp thread. I'm just doing low carb.

I have been using a breathaliser to monitor ketones and it's at 1.0 already (day 5) so I think whatever I'm doing is working. The (oops four) G&Ts I had didn't affect my blood sugar so I think I'm doing well.

I'm drinking lots of water and, after your post, looked in to Lo Salt which was an amazing find because it replaces some of the sodium with potassium which is what I think I was lacking.

Feeling amazing today, loads of energy and the buzz I remember having from last time I did low carb! I'm definitely sticking to this. I intend to stay in keto permanently now. It helps massively with my anxiety and I can't believe how alive I feel!

I would usually drink lager but now it's G&T all the way (when I drink which is 2-3 times a week on average).

Can I ask why you don't recommend alcohol in the early stages? I don't want to have to trawl through all the previous posts.

Thank you prettybird :)

Sorry again, just seen the topic is 'low carb boot camp'.

I just thought this was a low carb thread.

I will have a look into the 'boot camp'. I'd be happy to be on board. x

Easily done Smile - there is a separate, more general "Low Carb Diet" topic too.

The Mumsnet Low Carb BootCamp has been running a long time. There are 2-3 "formal" Boot Camps a year, usually run by BIWI and they last 10 weeks, with ongoing support betweentimes.

There are loads of links in one of the tabs of the spreadsheet that is linked to in the OP of each week's thread.

The reason for the no alcohol in the first 2 weeks (and thereafter only low carb and in moderation - so gin is ok Wink) is that you are trying to get your body fat-adapted and the alcohol is too easy an energy source. So rather than fat, it will use the alcohol.

The really good thing about Boot Camp is that provided you follow the Rules, you can still eat well (have a look at the recipe threads that have been stickied Smile) and you don't have to calorie count or carb count.

Brilliant, thank you.

I'll have a good read through now and look at the recipes.

Much appreciated.
