Lost 6lbs in 5 days. Would a small glass of red tomorrow completely ruin it?

Am having duck breast and lots of lovely veg tomorrow. I've been really good for the past 5 days, although not really been following Induction - just low carb.

I've lost 6lbs which is probably just water but which I think is visible as I'm only small.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a small glass of red wine with my dinner tomorrow.

Will it completely mess everything up?

No...my sister swears by having one day a week...on the weekend usually and on that day she breaks the rules.

You can't not have ANYTHING nice...that's how people end up giving up.

Have your wine and then just get back on the diet.

My sister breaks her diet with a packet of Walkers crisps on saturdays Grin

I have a couple of glasses of red over the weekend - it sometimes means a small increase on the scales come Monday but it soon drops off again

LaLaLanded · 22/01/2018 13:17

Does this depend on someone's sensitivity to alcohol?

I wonder because I've found alcohol has no effect on my weight whatsoever. As long it's red wine - sugary cocktails will of course but red wine/prosseco/g&t make no difference. I'm keto but in maintenance so not in calorie deficit.

Whereas a friend of mine who tried keto couldn't have a couple of glasses without it showing on the scales. I wondered if it was because she wasn't yet fat adapted...?

Sorry, might be a bit of a derail. I suppose what I'm trying to say, anecdotally, is that perhaps it works differently for different people.

Grufeling · 22/01/2018 20:16

That's interesting LaLaLanded.

I don't think I'm established yet in keto. The wee sticks show I am a bit but I think I've a way to go. I've been low carb for a week or so now.

Wondering how long it takes to get keto established?

Grufeling · 27/01/2018 18:04

Week 4 for me next week but have just been invited for dinner and told that we're having paella and birthday cake. Shit. Can't decline invite.

It's going to ruin everything isn't it? Am in ketosis now and it was going well but it's going to set me back isn't it?

BIWI · 27/01/2018 18:17

If you're already that far into low carbing, then you should be fat-adapted (assuming that you've stuck to the rules!)

Events like this are very testing - but ultimately, it's called 'life'. If you can't change it (would you friends be amenable to that?), then go and enjoy it. Just make sure that the next few days after, you're super strict. Keep the fat up, drink the water and, if you can, up your exercise.

Grufeling · 27/01/2018 19:36

I couldn't ask them to change. The party girl has requested that choice of food so will just have to be strict before and after I guess

BIWI · 27/01/2018 19:38

I know it's hard, especially when you've just started. You have my sympathy Smile

If I were you, I'd eat before you go, so that you're not hungry - and so you can control the amount you eat. And pick out all the meat/seafood from the paella and eat that before the rice. When it comes to the birthday cake, when they're cutting it just ask for a sliver.

But enjoy it!

Aridane · 27/01/2018 19:44

Won’t it take you out of ketosis?

BIWI · 27/01/2018 19:54

You don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight!

Grufeling · 27/01/2018 21:21

BIWI - I thought ketosis meant using fat for fuel and hence losing weight. If I switch out of ketosis for a time (especially in only week 4), how would I lose weight? The carbs I'd eat at the dinner would be used for fuel rather than my fat stores, wouldn't they?

Or have I completely misunderstood this?

BIWI · 28/01/2018 08:34

Not really. You've switched your body into burning fat. One slip won't really jeopardise things

BIWI · 28/01/2018 08:37

This:

Ketosis
Ketosis means that your body is burning fat at high enough rates that you have a lot of ketone bodies, waste compounds produced during the burning of fat. These ketone bodies can also be burned for energy by your brain and most of your other body cells. To have ketone levels high enough to be detectable, you need to keep your carbohydrate intake lower than 50 grams per day, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. If you are in ketosis, which can be verified by using urine ketone strips, you can be 100 percent sure that your body is in fat-burning mode.

Fat Burning
During a study published in 2005 in the "Journal of the American Medical Association," researchers compared different diet plans, finding that people can lose fat without being in ketosis. If your carb intake is too high, your body prioritizes burning these carbs first. You can promote fat burning by decreasing your carbohydrate intake, but you don't necessarily need to go as low as required to be in ketosis. Restrict your carbs slightly to help your body switch into fat-burning mode more easily.

I think one glass of wine with food is fine. My downfall is when I drink wine of an evening. Even a small glass makes me want to munch something else.

Grufeling · 28/01/2018 20:14

Thanks Biwi. That's helpful.
