Please advise a hungry pregnant exhausted mum cut carbs!

So I just slipped over the boundary into gestational diabetes territory and have been advised to reduce carbs.

This is actually something I've been pondering anyway - LHCF makes sense to me, although I am too much of a wimp to go at it full pelt IYSWIM and figured pregnancy wasn't the right time to attempt something so different.

Ashamed to say once the dreadful nausea phase was over (16 weeks of barely eating) I have really enjoyed being able to eat again... too much :( I have stuck to my New Years resolution of cutting right down on fizzy drinks though so that's one thing that helped (lost nearly 2 stone pre pregnancy as before NY I was drinking it every day)

I am also autistic so find sudden change pretty hard, and due to my physical health issues (causing muscle pain etc) I find cooking quite difficult at times.

I would really appreciate some simple ideas of nice meals please Thanks

I like most things other than mushrooms, celeriac, fennel, seafood and smoked fish :o

Thank you!

Ah yes I use whole milk.

Was out for lunch and had a bacon cheese burger without bun and salad instead of fries. Sooo filling and I found myself wondering how I would've managed that plus bun/chips in the past. 5.5 an hour later yay.

What are the thoughts on sweeteners though? I normally avoid apart from the occasional Pepsi max type thing and I did cave and have some today as I was just totally exhausted and tearful.

Just wanted to update! I saw the consultant on Monday, by which time I was feeling very unwell and sort of spacey/dizzy/extremely tired etc. She looked at my levels and said they were too low.

Turns out I had misunderstood what she had said before. She hadn't meant to give it all up at all! Blush But being autistic (so taking things literally) as well as panicking at getting diagnosed with GD etc, I didn't realise that.

She was quite horrified that I'd taken it so far and her parting words were "now go and have something carby for dinner before you give me a heart attack from worrying about you" :o

So I have since been more moderate and the numbers have still been very good so I feel like I have more to play with IYSWIM. That evening I had a half portion of pasta with salad and it still felt like loads, this morning I had a slice of lower carb bread with my eggs etc

Didn't even get a chance to ask about ketosis etc as now I know the balance she means (basically to halve what I'd normally have for carbs and increase protein and fat instead). I saw another consultant today who said my numbers have been much better since then. I am still feeling like crap though TBH and very wobbly but not sure if that's just a late pregnancy thing

Glad you're being well looked after Cagliostro! I have type 2 and am currently 16 weeks pregnant - it's really hard for me especially in the mornings to keep my sugars under 7.8 (the top number I'm allowed after food) and I'm really, really off eggs which doesn't help. Frustrating!! I think I'm getting closer to insulin 2bh (currently metformin and diet) as mornings just seem to be my bad times no matter what :(
How have the past few days been for you? Have you made a meal plan? x

Oh no it must be even harder when you are off food as well! My aversions pretty much eased off after 16 weeks (epic nausea this time, far worse than my previous pregnancies), hope it's similar for you and it gets easier. Have to say though sometimes I feel sick after a proteiny breakfast. I am craving cereal like never before.

I have joined the GDUK Facebook page and it's really helpful, although I am now panicking about whether I'm missing sugar spikes and all sorts. Being a chronic overthinker really isn't helpful in this sort of situation! I am confused about snacking too as nothing was said about that but I read that it is better to. But after a high protein/fat meal I am so full, even with small portions.

I haven't meal planned but I am doing pretty well with a well stocked fridge of yummy things! Numbers have been pretty good overall and I'm starting to get a better balance I think. Such a minefield though.

Oh yeah! I think I'll join the GDUK page - I know it's for gestational diabetes but alot of the advice you guys get given (like food pairing) also helps type 2's - thanks for reminding me about that!!
As for cereal cravings - I so want to just grab a bowl of cereal in the mornings rather than have to create something or eat cheese and nuts, especially as I've got the school run to do lol. It'll be okay in the end though for both of us; you should be fine after your delivery and my sugar levels will go back to 'normal' (still type 2 but less sensitive) after I have my baby too. I think finding other people in the same situation is so important though - my last 3 pregnancies were spent eating cake ;)
