The first couple of weeks see the chat threads moving really quickly, and so it's easy to miss questions.

If you have a particular question you'd like to ask, just post it here and I'll make sure that I get to it as soon as I can.

keepon- it's really hard, in my experience, to find ready made soups that are low in carbs. The only solution here is to make your own. Good low carb ingredients like celery, shallots, broccoli, cauliflower, leeks, spinach and home-made chicken stock will make a lovely soup. And you can make it even lovelier by adding double cream and/or blue cheese.

In terms of things for work, we only have a microwave, and I cook a lot in it. Today, for example, I had a salmon fillet which I poached in butter and lemon juice, and I served it with an avocado, and some mayo into which I'd mixed some capers.

Raisin preserved lemons aren't too bad - the Belazu ones are 3.2g carbs per 100g, so they should be fine

insertcoolerusernamehere - try adding slices of lemon or lime or cucumber to your water. It adds another element which might work for you.

Also, I use PLJ and add a tiny dash (and I mean tiny) to some fizzy water, which makes a nice, sharp drink.

For the last two mornings I have thrown up and I think this is because of low sugar level. Does this go away or will I have to drink/eat something sugary to prevent this from happening?

BIWI · 26/10/2016 16:22

I've never heard of lack of sugar making people throw up! And how awful for you.

But if you're doing low carb properly, you shouldn't have a low blood sugar level. It should be stable.

You certainly don't need to eat or drink anything sugary.

You might be pregnant of course

Thanks for your message. I really believe in this way of eating and want it to work. My class were due in today at 10 and I was standing at the sink being sick! I think my body is just in shock to go from having a carb diet (vegetarian) to having a very low carb intake. Definitely not pregnant!

If it's put it in the microwave and heat up, why not bring on leftovers from night before? Could work well?

BIWI · 26/10/2016 17:42

keepon it really doesn't take long!

Today:

Peel and slice avocado and put on a plate
Open pack of salmon, put in a bowl with butter and squeeze lemon over it, microwave on high for 2 minutes
Whilst that's cooking, dress the avocado with oil/wine vinegar, and squeeze mayo onto plate, with a spoonful of capers
Serve salmon

Probably took 5 minutes in all?

Lucylocket had you eaten before you went to work? It sounds like you hadn't!

If you had, list out for me what you've eaten and drunk over the last two/three days, see if I can spot anything obvious

Keep on I batch cook when I have the time, usually weekends and evenings, so then I can just throw a combination in a Tupperware and zap at work.

For example today I had chunks of belly pork braised with courgettes with kale and cauliflower. Tonight I had fried lamb steak and aubergine for tea which I'll finish for my lunch tomorrow and while I cooked that I whacked some broccoli in the oven so that's ready to go when I need it.

I cooked up a batch of chicken wings yesterday so they will go nicely with the broccoli.

I make a nice green soup. A bag of spinach, head of broccoli, leeks, celeriac if you like, stock, coconut milk and Thai paste.

Boil it then blitz it - I usually overdo the chillis and add more cream... looks shit but tastes amazingSmile

MothershipG · 27/10/2016 06:41

Chocbisc You need to change your username! You can't have a username like that on this thread! WinkGrinGrin

No treats in the strict First 2 week phase as we're weaning ourselves off sugar and sugar subs. If you move to BC light subsequently you can have berries and cream or the odd square of very dark chocolate.

BIWI · 27/10/2016 07:52

Lucy - that looks alright, although it's a little low on veg/salad. Are you eating plenty of salt? And what about water?

And when are you eating your breakfast?

And here's a really helpful post from another forum about carb flu:

Low Carb plans such as Atkins can be very effective for some people including me, many people who start a low carb diet experience get what’s called the “ketosis flu” or the “induction flu” in the first few days while the body is adapting to burning ketones instead of glucose.

The basic symptoms are:
– Headaches
– Nausea
– Upset stomach
– Lack of mental clarity (brain fog)
– Sleepiness
– Fatigue

It’s called the “ketosis flu” for a reason: you feel sick. I’ve gone through it and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Fortunately it only lasted 2 days but then suddenly I woke up feeling much better, less hungry and my energy level was really high and consistent throughout the day!

The first time I thought to myself: “What the heck am I doing? I feel like I’m going to die!” but I persevered and when it was over I didn’t regret a thing because what I had gained mentally and physically was 100% worth it.

For those of you that are going through the ketosis flu, don’t give up! I know you feel like it’s never going to get better but stick with it and you´ll be so happy you did! I’m telling you, waking up refreshed for the first time in years, not getting the afternoon “blah” feeling and stuffing my face with carbs to try to boost my energy is the best side effect of the low carb diet I’ve experienced. Okay, losing weight while eating good food, feeling full and satisfied is great too.

First you have to understand why your body is reacting this way. Your body’s been burning glucose for energy so it’s basically full of enzymes that are waiting to deal with the carbs you eat, but now the body needs to make new enzymes that burn fat for fuel instead of carbs, and the transition period causes the flu-like symptoms.

There are some things you can do to lessen the symptoms of the ketosis flu and to make it go away sooner (to force the body to transition sooner) Ok, let’s get to the good part – what to do:

First of all – you’re probably dehydrated. Drink PLENTY of water while you’re on a low carb diet, and then drink some more.

Watch your electrolytes. When the body is getting rid of excess insulin from your former carb-crazy diet you´ll lose lots of fluids that have been retained in your body. This causes the rapid weight loss most people see in their first few days of ketosis, it’s mostly water, sorry. When you lose all the retained water you also lose electrolytes like sodium, magnesium and potassium. When you’re lacking them you´ll feel like crap so when you’re feeling really ill on the ketosis flu try things like chicken/beef broth and look for foods rich in these minerals. Take a multi-vitamin and a multi-mineral.

Ok, here is where people throw the red flag – Eat more fat – Yup, I said MORE fat. Have some butter, just not on a roll, eat some bacon and eggs for breakfast, just skip the potatoes and toast. This will force your body to hurry up the transition. You´ll think this is crazy and think you´ll never get lose weight eating this way, but you will.

Don’t eat too much protein – The body can transform protein into glucose so if you eat too much of it in the first days it will slow down the transition. Go for fatty meat and cheese if you can, add fat to protein shakes etc.

Drink water, replenish electrolytes (sodium, magnesium, potassium) with food and supplements, drink broth, eat fat and not too much protein.

The first time I did Atkins I felt absolutely awful but like BIWIS says you will wake up one day and feel completely different. Now I'm a low carb old timer I don't get low carb flu

Lucylocket13 · 27/10/2016 12:45

Thanks- that was really helpful. I feel a lot better today.

Visaste · 28/10/2016 17:26

I've been doing LCHF for a couple of months with great success. However my doctor has now recommended I cut out all dairy (as well as caffeine, alcohol and red meat Shock) to see if it helps with some ongoing hormone-related health issues. I am slightly distraught as I love butter, cheese, cream in my coffee and bacon! I'm going to try to do it though and was wondering if anyone else on the bootcamp is dairy-free and if so how you're finding it? I'm slightly concerned that I'm just not eating enough and am starting to feel hungry because I'm not having enough fat, despite chucking olive oil on everything and having lots of avocado etc. I had some brazil nuts today (sorry, I know it's against the rules) but was starving! Any ideas?

BIWI · 28/10/2016 19:24

If you go onto the spreadsheet, you'll find on the tabs at the bottom, some menus for ultra bootcamp - which is a dairy-free version. There are three days' worth of menus - one for meat and egg eaters, one for meat and no egg eaters and one for fish and egg eaters. With all those meals, I'm sure you can perm some kind of suitable menu!

Good luck - that sounds tricky.

BIWI · 28/10/2016 19:25

Have you looked into coconut alternatives? You can buy Coyo yoghurts, from Waitrose, which are dairy-free. (Although I have to say they're really expensive!)

And coconut milk/cream can help you to add fat to your meals. Although avoid creamed coconut, as this is much more carby.

OP posts:
MothershipG · 28/10/2016 19:26

Visaste I'm pretty much dairy free at the moment as I find it inhibits my weight loss.

I add butter where previously I would have used cream or cheese. I also try to make sure I have fatty meat, lots of belly pork & chicken wings, roasted vegetables and avocados.

It does make things a bit harder but once you get your head round it it's doable.

Visaste · 28/10/2016 20:45

Thanks BIWI and Mothership. I missed the ultra bootcamp tab so will have a look. Will also check out CoYo. And I love coconut milk so will be having a lot more curries I think!
