Gaining weight and clothes getting tighter having started LCHF - why?

I posted this question on a different thread, but have been pointed here to post.

I started with the Uber boot camp meals last week for the three days, then switched to standard boot camp rules after. However I am increasing in weight and waist size and it is putting me off this WOE.

I increased water as necessary (although I only drink water normally anyway, so I just increased it as required)

My fat intake has increased hugely, my carb intake reduced dramatically, a slight increase in protein on some days, but less on other days, so in other words overall similar to previous to stating LCHF.

I did have stock on a couple of occasions in case it was my salt levels too low. But I seem to be hugely retaining water, which from my understanding means that over the last 5.5 days this diet is not working for me as I expected.

Does anyone have any explaination or solution? This bloating is getting me down.

Some people also find that double cream, like butter, does not affect weight loss as both are not particularly insulinogenic.

willitbe · 27/04/2015 11:20

Looks like I might have to cut back further on the dairy Sad. I have still lost no weight and no inches either. I think you have explained it brilliantly Nappyaddict. Thank you.

Interesting article BIWI.

willitbe can you post what you have eaten over the last few days?

also have you drank the recommended amount of water in the BC rules?

willitbe · 27/04/2015 20:39

Nappy

In brief!:
B: mushroom omelette made with double cream, fried in butter.
L: Tuna, with mayonnaise in iceburg lettuce.
D: homemade Chilli, with sour cream and little cheddar cheese grated on top
snack: one teaspoon of the lowest carb peanut butter I could find (I know this was naughty, but I needed something fast!)
For that day MFP app calculated 25g carbs, with Carbs / fat / protein ratios of 4 /82/ 14

B: Tuna, with mayonnaise (the lowest carb one I could find) in iceburg lettuce.
L: 3 bacon rashers, with crispy salad and a olive oil / white wine vinegar dressing.
D: Chicken , cauliflower, broccoli, fried in butter and feta cheese.

MFP said 18g carbs, and ratio of 4 / 72 / 24

B: avocado and sliced smoked salmon.
L: Tuna, with mayonnaise in iceburg lettuce
D: Ham with crispy salad and a olive oil / white wine vinegar dressing, with grated cheddar cheese.
Snacks: a babybel cheese
MFP said 14g carbs, and ratio of 3 / 72 / 25

I have been having more salad this week than last week.

I am having the recommended water intake of 3 litres, or very close to it, definitely over 2 litres a day.

I am limited in time with chasing after a toddler and trying to make the rest of the families meals as well as sort out my own.

I have only been at this 13 days, but was hoping for some indication that I was on the right track by now!

I have been taking substantially less calories over the last 2 weeks, compared to what I have been taking for the previous 8 months, and I thought that I should notice something even with this change.

I have been reading up a little, and going through some threads on mn, and realise that it can mess with hormones, I am on HRT and now beginning to wonder if this is an issue, and if I am retaining water badly, feeling very bloated.

With the amount of water I am drinking I can't understand why I am retaining water either! Unless it is the wonderful idea of water replacing fat and some extra water retention, and suddenly I am going to lose loads of inches and lbs!

If you're bloated, you need to drink more water!

And I realise I didn't answer your question about processed foods - smoked salmon, bacon and ham are all things that we need to try and curb.

nappyaddict · 27/04/2015 23:27

BIWI would 14g carbs be too little? I thought I read somewhere that 18g carbs was the lowest you should go but I may be wrong?

nappyaddict · 27/04/2015 23:30

willitbe Try to make sure you drink the 3 litres of water a day and cutting out cheese, sour cream, creme fraiche, yoghurt for 7 days and see if it makes a difference.

willitbe · 28/04/2015 12:06

Nappy: Thank you, I will try to find some dairy-free recipes that I can do.
BIWI: when I say ham, I mean a cooked ham joint rather than slices of processed meat, or is ham generally not good? Sorry for all the questions, still learning.

I've definitely found my sweet spot cutting back on dairy. Lost another pound since Friday.

Fauxlivia · 30/04/2015 11:25

I've stalled a bit too. Lost half a stone in the first few weeks but now stuck at 11st12!

Am typically eating for breakfast half an avocado and a babybel, snack celery with pate or handful macadamia nuts and dinner chicken/fish with celeriac chips. I have that new fage yoghurt with nuts and berries sometimes. I must up my water - I struggle with this and will cut out the cheese and see what happens.

miffy49 · 30/04/2015 11:55

How many weeks in are you fauxlivia? Most people stick for a bit around weeks 3-5. Its as though you go through an adaptation phase. From my reading its not a true stall unless it lasts over a month.

I wouldn't be too quick to totally ditch dairy as its so useful. I would look at nuts first if you are still truly stuck after a few weeks. They are notorious for stalling. Often you don't need to ditch all dairy. You can just be sure you aren't using it in snacks and be a bit mindful when you pour your cream. Smile

BIWI · 30/04/2015 14:39

Fauxlivia - it also doesn't sound like you're eating very much!

Fauxlivia · 30/04/2015 15:37

I am about 5 weeks in so maybe that's it. Biwi I am honestly not hungry. I miss cake and the comfort of a bar of chocolate in the evening when I'm relaxing but I realise now that I was eating those things because I enjoyed them and was addicted to the sugar, not because I was hungry.

Have been measuring out the nuts because I know it's really easy to eat loads but I will cut those out from tomorrow and see how it goes (too late for today). I think I'm having 1300 cals per day (at a guess).

I'm looking after my mum's dog for a couple of weeks so doing loads of walking but not getting any skinnier grrr!

nappyaddict · 30/04/2015 17:53

1300 cals doesn't sound much for a high fat diet? add butter, oil, home made mayo, coconut oil to everything you can.

Fauxlivia · 30/04/2015 19:33

So how many calories should I be having? I do add mayo to the chicken (not home made admittedly) and I do add butter to veg and cream to coffee.

nappyaddict · 30/04/2015 21:13

we don't really count calories on this woe. calories is not something you need to worry about if you are sticking to the rules.

Fauxlivia · 30/04/2015 22:42

well that's good, cos I had a massive dinner of grilled salmon with mayo and runner beans with butter Smile

nappyaddict · 01/05/2015 17:47

next time try this just leave out the flour and wine.

Fauxlivia · 01/05/2015 18:20

Looks lovely
