Bootcamp - the questions thread

From experience of past Bootcamps, in the first few weeks the chat threads move really, really quickly and it's difficult sometimes to see/answer everything.

So this is a place to post any questions that you might have. Those of us who are old hands at low carbing will check this thread regularly and make sure that we answer you as soon as we can.

Do you have to eat meat or fish at every meal or would a dish of cauliflower and leek topped with cheese be ok for a main meal? X

FelixFelix · 08/05/2014 16:57

Pregnantpause I use MFP but only to take note of what I've eaten that day, I don't look at the carbs etc. I've found a hell of a lot of foods have been input very wrong! At first my carbs were coming up really high and I didn't know why, then I checked some of the food I had selected and they had ridiculous stats like 40g carbs in half a head of broccoli Shock I don't really know an alternative, but I'm just putting my trust in BIWI's rules of what we can and can't eat and not straying from it. It worked well for me last time Smile

beachestoexplore · 08/05/2014 18:19

And I thought watermelon was almost all water. Damn those hidden carbs! Thanks for the answer and the all fruit reminder - had been having strawberries and cream lately too Blush think I was confusing bootcamp with 'lite'. Will recap on rules now Smile

Thanks BIWI!

Evening. I was tempted to low carb for weight loss but Ive just read about a few things that I suffer from that it can help, so I think its more than decided.

I have dine lowcarbing before but screwed it up at the end by eating the wrong veg.

I LOVE fruit and vegetables so they are a really wrench for me to wave goodbye to not to mention the wine.

So my question is, is there any veg I can have? If so, can I have an example of amounts per day?

Thank you.

weaseleyes · 08/05/2014 20:00

Thank you for advice, biwi!

BIWI · 08/05/2014 21:38

Of course you can have vegetables! Have you not read the rules? Your carbs should be coming mainly from vegetables and salad.

look at the tabs on the bottom of the spreadsheet to see the list of allowed veg

Nuts won't sabotage it, but it will slow things down for you. The whole point of Bootcamp is that the first two weeks are strict to ensure that you get into ketosis and switch to fat-burning and away from carb-burning.

As long as you haven't eaten too many (you haven't, have you? ) it should be fine.

In the first two weeks you could see a significant loss - some people have lost as much as a stone! - but then after that you should plan on losing 1-2lbs per week.

OP posts:
StuntNun · 09/05/2014 07:23

BestFriend based on my weight loss I would say the end of December to lose three stone but the weight will come off quickly at first then slow to a steady 1-2lb per week. The last half stone can take a lot longer than the rest as you're near to your maintenance weight. If you want to aim for October then you may want to stick to Bootcamp for longer as I find it has a better satiety effect whereas in Bootcamp Light it is easy for the carbs to creep back in without you realising, for example the odd handful of almonds becomes a handful of almonds every day out of habit. If you have tight time goals then the other really important thing is not to get disheartened when you don't lose because the classic pattern of weight loss on this way of eating is to stay the same for a couple of weeks or more then lose a lot all at once with a whoosh. This is to do with the way your body compensates for using it's fat stores by replacing them with water temporarily until a certain point is reached whereupon the water is lost and your weight suddenly drops. Measurements are a good way to track whether fat loss is occurring (as water takes up less space than fat because it is less dense. I measure bust, waist, hips, forearm and wrist and honestly I didn't even know I had 'fat wrists' until I lost half an inch from them!

Also if you are losing a substantial amount of weight quickly then be aware that it takes longer for the skin to shrink back in than it does to lose the fat. I found after the initial large weight loss, my tummy looked a bit more wobbly because there wasn't the visceral fat inside pushing everything out iyswim. Exercise is the best way to get things back into shape more quickly and I'm not talking becoming a gym rat, just adding in some walking or swimming or exercise DVDs, whatever suits your own inclinations.

How do you all cook your steaks? in Butter or oil? Ive got some lovely sirloins for saturday night :)

StuntNun · 09/05/2014 13:44

Pingu I marinade them in olive oil, red wine or red wine vinegar, tiny bit of salt (always salt steaks after they're cooked), lots of black pepper, a sprinkle of dried herb if you like. Marinade them for as long as you can, e.g. overnight but ten minutes will do in a pinch. Then cook them in a hot dry pan, the olive oil will keep them from sticking or just a smidge of oil or butter in the pan. My DH likes to flip them frequently so they don't stick. Most importantly, rest them on a warm plate for five minutes before eating. I deglaze the pan with a splash of cream or a splash of red wine to make an impromptu sauce, you can pour the juices from the steak plate back in as well.

pingufan · 09/05/2014 14:17

Drool.....oh the cream deglaze sounds wonderful - thank you so much I will start the marinading tonight!!

I still drink coffee with milk - I really don't like it with cream. Best advice I can give you is to see what happens! Although that doesn't mean a million cups a day, obviously Grin

I have gone cold turkey on the milk in tea and coffee. I'm not loving it but I will see how it goes Twinings Earl Grey decaf is quite nice.

I couldn't find any total full fat yoghurt so I got an alpro soya yoghurt instead which I assume is ok because it's 2.1g carb per 100g. My real question is both times after I've eaten in my tongue has felt like I have burnt it on something hot, anyone else have this with the soya yoghurt or any ideas why? I don't think I've ever eaten anything soya before.

magso · 10/05/2014 15:40

I like vanilla redbush too Minty, but I usually add a splash of milk which is not allowed now so I am adjusting! It smalls lovely.
Is liquorice and mint tea OK? Neither my teapigs or pukka packets give nutritional information. Now that I love (and without milk). But it is naturally sweet and so I presume might have carbohydrate? It is my standard flask tea (the flavour improves rather than stewing stew) for work and my long commute (I have POTS so need to keep my BP up -others should limit), but I could change to peppermint and vanilla if liquorice is unsuitably carby.

BIWI · 10/05/2014 15:59

Ingredients for Pukka liquorice and peppermint tea:

Peppermint Leaf (60%), Liquorice Root (40%)

Nutritional value of liquorice root, according to Holland and Barrett:

Liquorice root is a great flavouring agent in both Eastern and Western foods and confections

Typical values per 100g

Minty - wherever you see a carb count that is 'net carbs' that indicates that it's an American product/site - they count fibre in carbs. It's the net carb figure that we use, I think.
