Hello everyone!

Gingerbread have launched a survey about single parents' views on work, to find out what you think is important in a job.

They're keen to hear from any single parents, whether working or not.

Have you got a few minutes to help them out? There's a prize draw to tempt you - click here to get started!

Done. They needed an option for 'isn't relevant' though, rather than just 'don't know no opinion'

Do we need anything different from working (married) parents? Childcares a nightmare for everyone !

Meglet · 08/07/2010 21:13

done.

startdust I suppose married working parents can juggle their annual leave? Still a nightmare, but they can almost cover the holidays that way. My parents used to take it in turns to have holiday to look after me and my sister, although we still had to go to Grandparents some of the time. Dreadful it was too, lots of trips to the corner shop for sweets .

gillybean2 · 09/07/2010 08:11

It's not just childcare that's an issue (for me at any rate).

For me it's the 'unsociable' school hours I have to work which means I never get to do after work jollies, or evenings out, or even going out for lunch as a group because I don' get a lunch break. Most marrieds can get their OH to babysit of an evening, and between them usually have enough relatives available to cover if not or have enough disposable income to pay for one (let alone the night out).

It's the fact that because I work I can't do the social stuff the SAHM's organise during the day.

So between those too I'm stuff socially.

I also feel hugely embarresed that I pretty much wear the same one outfit to work every day. I simply can't afford the stuff they chat about at work. And it's not nice having to explain that actually I don't have £1 to put in the birthday/leaving present collection or to sponser someone.

And any time there's something happening at school, or my ds is ill it falls to me.

And then because I only work school hours with no lunch break I'm rushing round afterwards trying to fit in all the other stuff like appointments, going to bank etc as well as ferrying ds about, organising a home and generally wearing myself out so much over the last 11 years I have no energy or reserves any more and never any hope of a lie in or even a day to recharge as no EX around either.

Being a single parent is far more than just about the child care issues.

Sorry to hi-jack
