korma........what the hell are you talking about??
Who is saying woe is them? Answers and advice to op's is what I am reading!

Oh and by the way if anyone is saying 'woe is me', then I wouldnt look much further than your nose.
Poor you having to up your ad's!
Try making a xmas for LO's with absolutely no money, why, because the money we get to live on each week has nearly always gone before the week is out, and yes, it is a struggle any time of the year! But at xmas it is so much worse! The kids deserve a xmas and so that is when so many people have to up the ad's or they would just go insane trying to work out how they can give their kids a xmas,

juicyjolly · 12/12/2008 20:03

thisis....How many bloody years are you talking about ffs! Yes we all remember when you could buy a loaf for penny...shame is....something called inflation happened. As well as unemployment and redundancies, do you think these people should do without a treat for their kids at xmas too? Or is that just the kids to single mothers on benefits.

FrostytheSurfmum · 12/12/2008 20:06

I do see what korma is saying though. All sorts of people struggle to make ends meet and their incomings just cover their outgoings without anything left for any treats. It's not just those on benefits, it happens to those who aren't on benefits.

MotherChristmas2OliverJames · 12/12/2008 20:08

So you and your DP both work in excess of 50 hours a week and dont spend money on ANYTHING else other than the necessities?

Do you necessities include sky and running a car? mine dont, the only reason i have the internet is because we signed up to an 18 month contract before XP left. Mine includes water, rent gas and electric (some of which i havent been able to pay for a few months and am dreading the bill.

I am sorry but i find this very hard to believe, even if you were both on minimum wage you would be earning at least 500 a week.

Either you have a very big mortgage or you are talking out of your backside.

I cant work because my XP left me with a huge debt which i would have to pay off as soon as start working and not having any qualifications i would only be able to get a pants job so instead i am using this time to better myself, so i can get a better job (and pay higher taxes)

MotherChristmas2OliverJames · 12/12/2008 20:10

BTW i am not woe is me-ing just trying to make korma see she isnt as hard done by as she seems to think

not sure entirely what you mean by how many bloody years??/ I am saying that my parents brought us up on very, very little money. they couldn't even afford bloody school shoes for me.

and NO, we didn't get treats for christmas. and NO, they weren't on benefits either. but it didn't make our Chrismasses any less special. I am saying that there is more to life than moeny... you can give your kidsa great christmas even if you have no money at all

what I am saying is that people on benefits have to live within their means, just like everyone else does.
not everyone who goes out and earns money had cash to throw around. there are people for whom money is just as tight as you who don't receive benefits anr really struggle to make ends meet.

i don't think you can ever assume that people who aren't on benefits are automaticlly better off than those who are.

a friend of mine at work recently quit, because she will get more living on benefits than she did working.
that's a pretty sad situation, when someone who wants to work and who is able to, chooses not to because she can get more from the state.

but when you work and have to pay travel and childcare as well, you're often left with nothing.

these people don't get a christmas bonus either.

something to think about

MotherChristmas2OliverJames · 12/12/2008 20:25

I am sorry that you had such illness and was left in debt because of it i really am, i just wanted to make you see that there is always someone worse off, thats what i always think, when i was with XP i always used to give to charity but today i had to tell the poor young girl selling the big issue who looked chilled to her bones that i couldn't afford to help her, it broke my heart.

I would love to have a car, my XP took ours with him, even though he can't drive

and i could only dream of ever having a mortgage, i can't get a council house, i cant even afford to move near my family and so am just renting, its just dead money, at least you are putting your money towards your future

I just hope that i can train high enough so i will be able to support DS without any help, after all we can't rely on anyone now.

BTW i got my first GCSE (equiv) this week

MotherChristmas2OliverJames · 12/12/2008 20:27

Oh, X posted, was tring to keep it civil, nevermind

thisisyesterday · 12/12/2008 20:30

good for you! well done
you know, you're still so young you've plenty of time to train and get a great job and one day I am sure you;ll have a mortgage and all the rest (although, honestly, they aren't all that! lol)

i meant what I said in my earlier posts though, I think that Christmas has become so commercial that you almost feel pressured into buying stuff and having a really lavish affair. But you know, kids really appreciate the little things, you don't have to have a lot of money to make it really special for them.

my friend and I were talking earlier about how when we were little our stockings were mostly full of satsumas, nuts and homemade biscuits and things and we were chuffed with them every time.

I think getting it made me see that maybe there is a chance that i will actually be able to become something, i left school with no GCSE's because of relentless bullying and just assumed i would always be in dead end jobs.

I really want to become a police officer (so i can sort out scum like my ex, not that i am bitter ), but i want to train so i have a back up just in case that doesnt happen.

I am very lucky because i know that my parents will spoil DS at christmas, so he wont miss out, its just a shame i can't spoil him myself.

I think i will be ready to take my next exam in a couple of weeks, that will be maths and english out of the way

I remember getting a couple of satsumas in my stocking too

thisisyesterday · 12/12/2008 20:43

well it's never too late, not these days.
i have GCSE's but flunked my a-levels. did the dead-end jobs for a while, then decided to go to Uni and become a midwife. amazingly got a place and then fell pregnant with ds1

ironic I suppose lol.
i still want to do it one day though

MotherChristmas2OliverJames · 12/12/2008 20:53

I used to really want to be a midwife! would bring great experiences

I am thinking that once i have done maths english and IT gcses i will enrol into college and do an 'Access to HE' course to get the equiv of 3 a-levels, then i would love to go on to do a degree, i have always wanted to get a degree

How old are your DC's? and when will you take up your training again? i am doing mine now so hopefully when he starts school i can start working, wont have to pay for child care then (or at least not much)

thisisyesterday · 12/12/2008 20:57

yeah, I did the access course at college. it's a great way into all sorts of things.

my eldest is nearly 4 now, baby is 1 and I have another one due in June!
that's the lot though, and once the youngest is in pre-school I will look into starting my training again, so a few years away yet.

but am hoping to train as a breastfeeding counsellor in the meantime

MotherChristmas2OliverJames · 12/12/2008 21:32

Congrats on your pregnancy, thats lovely!

i think if you was to try when you had so much on your plate you would find it hard, and then to try and pick yourself up after a knock down is hard. (btw i'm not saying that you couldn't do it, just that it would be hard)

Breastfeeding counsellor is also a great job which i think would bring some lovely experiences.

Wishing you lots of luck with your BFC training and your baby
