Working from home?

Hi

I am a single mother of two boys, age 10 and 13 and I have been on benefits for a few years now.
As I own my house (jointly with my ex partner) I am in a difficult position with regards to going back to work - this is because, no matter how many calculations my lone parent advisor comes up with, they never include the mortgage, saying that my ex should pay that - he is currently living with his new partner and trying to force me to sell our house so he can have his half of the equity - I am in no position to buy anywhere with the half I would get.
I wondered whether anyone else on this site is in a similar position, and whether it is viable that I can work from home and earn enough to cover my mortgage, bills, council tax, etc (this would have to be around £1000 per month minimum).
I can type and have experience with computers too.

why does it need to be from home? you could try a typing service I guess. Book-keeping? Can't think of anything that would bring in regualar income of the kind you mention - or would have done it myself! Freelance editing? you can do courses for that

It would be better from home otherwise I'd have to find the extra money for childcare - then there's school holidays to consider, when they're ill etc.

Teaching assistant? v family friendly. Not such good £ tho. I've just started at a preschool, really like it. Working that is!

I'd love to do that, a friend of mine does and as she lives in council accomodation she can afford this as the tax credits, etc cover her rent, As I own my house I would have to find the full £550 per month mortgage

Maggie I don't think you will find a home job that will pay that amount to cover the whole of your outgoings, at the moment you can earn £20 per week without it effecting your benenfits but anything over that and you will have to close you claim, you might be better off find school hour jobs, whether that is in a school, office or supermarket, working tax credits will help you with any childcare costs.
