Just interested to see what other single parents do for work and how you fit it in as I'm currently considering my options in my new job.

i am a communications manager. i dont enjoy it but it pays bloody well and means my boy and i have a standard of living i would not have otherwise. full time always ahs been and i studied part time for my degree which i finish this year.

treaclepudd · 03/07/2008 23:03

I'm in education, enjoy my job and keeps me extremely busy, good for kids holidays [consider myself very lucky in that respect] but it means I can never pick up or drop off at my childrens school which makes me feel like i'm missing out and that makes me sad.

finance director four day week.

Spicemonster how funny - do you have an entertaining budget - come and wine and dine me (though we are probably small fry as far as you are concerned)

Sdadof3 - are you Will Grundy

Mylittel pudding - would an au pair be an option so you would have another adult around?

ChasingSquirrels · 03/07/2008 23:14

I am an accountant and work for a regional practice, I do 20 hours over 4 days.
I mostly enjoy it.

MuthaHubbard · 04/07/2008 01:14

I'm an Application Analyst working in the IT Dept of a Global Active Sportswear company. I work full-time - currently 40 hrs per week in the office. During school time, depends on what my amazing babysitter can cover.

I'm currently a head-hunter but am back off to start studying again in September for two years to do a law conversion. Am then off to join a multinational corporate law firm in 2010. DD will be nine by then and I'm hoping she'll be able to deal with the long hours that I'll be working more easily. We have an au pair at the moment and will get another one when I start at the law firm. But I get to be a student again for two years first, spend more time with DD and wear jeans and trainers - yippee!!!!

Woo! Have been offered a new position at work. They were going to offer it to me in a couple of weeks anyway, but my notice just prompted them to let me know sooner. Will have a lot more responsibility, and is apart from one morning is totally flexible, will basically be able to do my hours whenever I want.

Love my job (GP shhhhh)...work 3 days a week - but to be fair H is pretty good at coming and taking girls to school and CM and bringing them home for me ...

mummyfantastico · 05/07/2008 09:22

I work 2 nights a week with children with severe medical problems. I love it but it can be lonely as i'm on my own with a sleeping child for most of my shift!
I'm very lucky that my mum and dad or my ex sil have my kids overnight while I work, and also have them sometimes to allow me a social life!

halia · 09/07/2008 03:21

this is really encouraging!

fedupofbeingfedup · 09/07/2008 11:54

I used to be a betting shop manager, before having my kids.

Now I work in the local shop, gets me out of the house though, wouldnt have it any other way, I hate not working.

Traineetoddlertrainer · 09/07/2008 21:07

Am a project manager, got a fab freelance contract 4 days a week. Long may it last

happynewme · 10/07/2008 20:56

I am a marketing manager - i love the marketing but hate having to manage a team with two particularly horrible people in it (they were there long before me and think they should have got the job - but they are crap so didn't..oooh!).

Its very tough, very stressful and pays alot of money. I have never earnt anywhere near it before. Been doing it six months but am at the point of giving it up

aiden · 10/07/2008 22:11

i currently work in accounts, dd is 11mnth, i've been back at work for just over two mnths now and i pretty much cry myself to sleep every night. how do people balance work and baby?

i was v bored on maternity leave and constant worry about money meant i went backt o work f/t. now i'm so tired form lack of sleep/relaxation/everyhting, i feel like i'm going to crack.

dd goes to childminder and she (cm) is not happy cos i'm always late, work is ok but i know i'm not performing at full potential, and the mummy guilt, the mummy guilt could have me in therapy until i retire.

i never thought things would be this hard... can someone tell how till it starts coming together?
