Bedtimes in summer holidays

It’s day 2 and I’m shattered already. How do you manage bedtimes throughout summer holidays? (I have time off work throughout), but my kids seem to think just because it’s not school, they can stay up past 10:30/11 each night. I’m shattered.

theyre 9-12

My youngest 2 (6 and 8) go up at their normal bedtime (7:30-8) but can have longer to play/read/watch TV. I’ve explained to them that we are spending all day together and I need some relaxing time.

So introduce consequences to not going to bed....

My 14yo was up at midnight. Then still in bed at 130pm.
Going to ground him and take his phone. Refusing to go to bed and mooching around at 1230 is ridiculous.

So most evenings, we either watch a movie or just generally try to just take it easy/ wind down. But for some reason my 11 year old seems to think anytime before 10:30/11 is early. I explained that summer holidays doesn’t mean late nights, we need time to rest and like you say - we’ve been together all day already. I’ve said it’s not 6 weeks of mum being an entertainer. By the time my brain then switches off it’s gone midnight. Each night.

@ZenNudistif they’re not tired they won’t sleep, you can’t force it. Teen brains are wired oddly. If they’re quiet, not disturbing anyone and get up if they need to rather than being told they should do life is easier, and quieter! Just coming out the other side of this.

mine are between 9-18

I’m loving the relaxed routine and they’re staying up till 11-12 and sleeping till lunch some days. They do this every summer and we always start getting back into school mode the last week of hols and they’ve sprays been fine.

With us the DC go to bed in their room at a set time, later in the holidays. If they're downstairs there are too many distractions so once in room these are limited. Have some time to unwind then settle down, still young though so must be more difficult with teenagers.

purpleme12 · 24/07/2025 19:18

Mostly she goes at the same time as usual

She's 11

She's hard work, someone who needs attention all the time for various reasons.
So I don't see the need to stay up later cos it's the holidays

WhitegreeNcandle · 24/07/2025 19:22

Mine are 10 and 12. School bedtime is 7.30. Holiday bedtime is mostly 8.30. They don’t have to go to sleep then, just be quiet and in their rooms with no screens. They’d are both still early risers and up at 6.40 so by 8.30 I need some time with no one making a mess as a tidy up or needing me!!

If they are 9 and 12 why are you so shattered you don't have to run around them like toddlers. Why does it affect you so much.

purpleme12 · 24/07/2025 20:25

Not every child is the same.

Not every child is only hard work when they're toddlers

TheNightingalesStarling · 24/07/2025 20:30

We have bedroom time, rather than bedtime. My 14yo needs more sleep than my 12yo. Its just moved from 8.30 to 9pm.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/07/2025 20:34

My 14 yo goes to bed earlier than yours! Actually, I do too!

Half an hour later than school days. Routine is good for them, regardless of it being the holidays. Mean mum here though. Kid with ADHD means I have to have a routine.
