I'm a lone parent with a 2.5 year old ds I
currently work 16 hours and claim wtc/ctc.

I Work in the finance industry so we have been warned ww could be made reduntant any time soom, due to credit crunch.

The hours i work will be hard to replace, as its when my mum can look after ds.

I Was wondering if anyone knew what income support i would get, i have been on entitlement.com, but it was saying would be entitled to 291 per week, so was sure this had to be wrong.

Live in own home with mortgage, i pay 300 per month, xp also pays 300 per month towards mortgage, this is the only help i get from him.

Any ideas???????????????

you'll probably (don't quote me on this) be entitled to £60.50 a week IS and then CTC on top of that - think it works out at about £45 a week per child

I am not sure how it al works when you have a mortgage.

Yet taking that aside, if you were renting you wuold get help towards your rent, child tax credit, and inc support.

I amsure someone else will be able to advise about how/if housing benefit pays towards a mortgage.

I am not sure how your ex's contirbution wuold affect it.

Prob best to telephone your local council/housing office and they wil be able to advise you.

IS possibly will pay something towards the mortgage but dont quote me on that as Im not sure they do it anymore

They dont pay it straight away- think u have to wait a couple of months and even then they will only pay the interest IYKWIM and will take into account anyone else paying towards it I expect

What FAQ says about the rest of it is about right plus you would still get Chid benefit and counci tax benefit too

I'm in your situation. I get £60.50 income support per week, £183.66 child tax credit every four weeks and child benefit of £74.50 (one child) every four weeks.

Re. the mortgage, I get all my mortgage paid BUT (im pretty sure about this), you have to wait 34 weeks before they will start paying it and they will only pay the interest on up to £100,000 mortgage. I dont know how having a joint mortgage will affect you though as my mortgage is solely in my name.

I also get 100% council tax credit.

Hope that helps.

Go to the entitledto.com website as they have links to the housing benefit calculators. Now that there's a cap on rent allowed it might be the same for mortgages? I think they pay interest only anyway.
I sympathise as its hard to get info about what you might be entitled to in hypothetical situations - nobody can ever seem to accurately tell you! But from my experience I would say work the minimum (16 hours)for the maximum contributions towards childcare etc, I think it works out better, just, financially than IS.

HappyMummyOfOne · 14/05/2008 14:39

Its approx £60 a wek IS plus standard CTC and FA.

However, if you are getting £300 a month from your ex you wont qualify for IS as the maintenance works out more. Therefore you would be far better off working and claiming WTC and help with childcare if you need to change your hours.

Mortgage help is available but it doesnt kick in for 39 weeks and I dont think you can claim if the mortgage is in joint names. It only covers the interest and not the repayment part and is capped to help at £100k so if your mortgage is over this amount you need to find the extra plus the repayment part.

If you get any redundancy money, it has to be under the threashold for savings if you try the IS route.
