Travelling as a lone parent

So my 10 year old son and I have to travel through Central London, use the tube to get to our holiday destination.
I'm very confident travelling through London and using the tube network, I've been doing so for over 20 years. I also used to take my son regularly when he was younger, but in a pushchair.
I've got this awful anxiety for the last 5 years about taking him into London, especially with luggage, as I may not have my full focus on him. This is a journey to my dad's that we've done many times. Am I being silly writing these notes to put in his pockets?? Xxx

Write your mobile number on his arm

I just used to Sharpie my number on DDs arm and point out a meeting place if we got separated when she was smaller. I did used to put a note in her little life bag when she was a toddler. Shed memorized my phone number by 10 though.

At 10 with no Send Id expect him to be able to find a staff member and tell them my number. Or to follow a plan, I'd let him know which station we were travelling to.
DD also had a Nokia brick for use when we were out and about somewhere we might be separated or if she was given some independence and going somewhere solo by that age. It wasn't 'her' phone but did have family numbers on it.

Well maybe a bit OTT as he's ten, many kids use the tube daily from age 11 to get to school on their own.
Does he know your phone number? Does he know your Dad's number?
But at ten he can stick by you - but if it makes you feel better write relevant details (but I'd just list them, not write as if he can't even speak).

It's giving Paddington Bear vibes.

Just a copy of your mobile number is fine!

You don’t need all the waffle. Just make sure he has your phone number, and he’ll be grand.

Even then, the chances of him needing it are minute.

Clumsy12345 · 11/08/2024 11:45

I’m not sure why he needs this? He is 10 unless he has Sen I would expect him to be able to approach someone for help and speak to them? I live in London and have never given my kids anything like that just put a sim in his phone and then he can call you, only you need to have his number my kids that age have a phone with sim and just my number.

There be dragons on the tube.

Also at 10 he should know your number my son knows mine doesn’t need it written on him.

I am sure you will be fine. Just keep him in front of you at all times. And take your time. I would write your number on his arm or give him second had phone if you are super worried. He is getting to an age to need one anyway and you can just give it to him for occasional times maybe?
