Football STUD advice

Ha - sorry - not quite as exciting as it sounds!

I've just bought ds (5) football boots as has first real match on grass at weekend. They have studs with a key so can be removed. What's the done thing?? Is the key just to tighten them up or do we take studs off at all (before match or something)
I have no idea!! Don't want to get it wrong.

Thank you xx

Key is to tighten, MsP - they do work loose over time so you can tighten before each game/training to make sure they won't drop out and get lost.

(Real matches at 5? Blimey!!! Good luck!)

Good luck to your ds. The key comes in handy to take the studs out for cleaning can make it alot easier especially if they are caked and dried.

Oh thank you so much. TBH he's only been playing for a couple of months. Obiously I know nothing about football so we don't even have a kick around in the garden but I did'nt want him missing out and to fall behind the other boys so he's joined a very nice little class. As it's the end of term the coach has arranged matches for all including the 4-5 year olds. DS is looking forward to it and I can't wait!! They're a nice bunch (including the mum's I've been chatting to - giving me loads of advice on football stuff but I only bought the boots after the class tonight) so should be fun for all.

leave them on.
you get the key because the boots can be used for rugby as well, and that requires different studs.

you would only need to change the studs if he walks on concrete a lot and they become sharp at th edges.

Detachable is oooooold traditional, CF - plastic is the new fancy-shmancy

Don't get "blades" though - the ones with long narrow fixed bits on the bottom - they can slice legs open and are not popular.

MsPontipine · 01/04/2008 00:02

They were the only ones in his size the man showed me at the shop the mums sent me to. They don't have scarey blades just metal studs. He thinks they're his tap shoes!

Oh he will love clarting about in them, MsP - they sound a bit like horseshoes - they're not really supposed to be worn on concrete/pavements, the kids should put them on when they get to the grass, but they adore the sound they make
