Hello all.
Currently work as a Food and Beveridge team leader for the National Trust. I've not really been enjoying my role for a while. I am single, pregnant and have a mortgage to cover. Assuming everything goes well at my 20 week scan, I will start maternity leave next April.
I desperately want to look for a new job. Something between 25k-30k. I'm really struggling to find anything suitable. I can't take time out to retrain, but I could always do a short course to gain a new skill.
Any suggestions or words of advice, please? I so want to build a better life.

In your place I'd do a part-time bootcamp in coding? It's a huge shortage area, you'd probably be able to WFH or flexibly which with a young child is always a plus. The courses are even online as well.

There are 100% bursaries and you could do the course in the run-up to your maternity leave before the baby arrives. If you check out: code.ed.ac.uk/ it has all the info but to qualify for a fully funded course you just need to be over 19 and have the right to live and work in the UK, no qualifications or experience needed at all.

I work somewhere which is constantly hiring software developers, at all levels, entry level, anything, they're always desperate. It's a huge, huge area to get into.

Hello, thanks for the reply.

I'm in a rural-ish area. Would I need to be travelling into a city? I maybe being thick, but I can't really see any jobs local to me in this line of work?

These jobs are everywhere and more likely to be remote than most as well - there are almost 4500 jobs on indeed today for a front end developer (just one of many roles you could do a boot camp for) and i see jobs in Bristol, Manchester, Brighton, Aberdeen, Truro but they are outweighed by the number which are remote: uk.indeed.com/m/jobs?q=Front+End+Software+Developer

I'd think about moving but that's mainly because everyone I know who lives in rural locations has struggled for childcare unless they have very helpful family nearby. (Admittedly a sample size of just 3)

Have you done one of the courses yourself with Edinburgh University?
I've had a look and it would seem you need to be a Scottish resident to be eligible for funding? I definitely don't have 6k to fund a course.

There are fully funded ones for residents in England too - if you click the banner up at the top of the webpage it tells you about those as well: www.hyperiondev.com/account/register/?next=/dfe_course_registration/skills-bootcamp/

The FAQs may also be helpful: www.hyperiondev.com/faq/

I haven't done the course myself, I heard about it through one of our investee companies - they recently hired two entry level software developers through the programme, both fully remote and one is a mum with primary aged kids who needed flexible hours working from home.

Anyway if it's not of interest then don't worry but I thought it might be something you hadn't yet considered - it's a good way to move into a super in-demand, flexible career that pays well and allows you to work remotely, without any initial qualifications.

Thank you.

I'm open to all suggestions and ideas. Keen to move forward and onto better things, hopefully!
