I'm a single mom who just arrived in the US and I'd like to know a little bit about how the system works because I would like to move on my own with my child and I don't know how the system works about daycares, because he is only 2 years old and I start working in October. How can I do it? Should I ask work for privileges because of age or else!?

Thank you for your help

The main types of daycare are

  • nanny (in your own home, fairly expensive for one DC compared to other provision)
  • childminder (family-based, small scale daycare, in the childminder's home).
  • nursery that provides daycare (check hours, some do shorter days, school hours only, others are open for full days pretty much year round (some close for a week at Christmas and Easter)

The latter two types are regulated, and inspected by OFSTED - reports should be available online)

Your local council will keep lists of registered childcare providers in their area - start by looking on their website.

Then it's a case of seeing which are located in places that fit your wider logistics, and ringing round to see if any have a vacancy
