I just get days like today where it is the only thing constantly on my mind, where every bloody thing reminds me that I am single and other people are happy and couply and being nice to each other.

Tis crap

Its the time of year.
In a week or so Christmas and New Year will be just a distant memory and everything will go back to normal again.
That's what I keep telling myself anyway!

nutcracker · 30/12/2007 21:14

Yes you are right, I can't wait for things to get back to normal.

How long have you been a single mum?

1066andallthat · 30/12/2007 21:22

As often as you like - it is really, really hard being the responsible one.

I comfort myself with no football on tv, (actually, my ex- didn't watch football but it still works for me!) many couples are even unhappier than I am being on my own and I am providing my boys with good role-modelling.

margoandjerry · 30/12/2007 21:26

I just think of all the other people who are not happy and couply but miserable and couply and suddenly it's not so bad

Sorry it's tough for you right now. Christmas is hard but if it's any consolation, January 7th is the peak day of the year for people filing for divorce. It's just a big pressure on everyone.

nutcracker · 30/12/2007 21:33

Have been single for 2 yrs in Feb, with a small blip which I don't count.

I can see why January is high for people filing for divorce, me and xp always argued over xmas, well more than any other time anyway.

I am glad that i'm not with him, but I do so hate the 24/7 responsibility of the kids and not having anyone to talk to when they are all in bed.

Alot of it is my own fault though so I shouldn't grumble.

Another vote here for can't wait until the fecking holidays are OVER!!

ginnedupudding · 30/12/2007 21:51

OMG - ex dp left me on January 7th for OW. How wierd.
I know what you mean about 24/7 responsibility. The evenings are the worst time, then you know your really on your own.
There are good points - whole bed to yourself, nobody snoring, watch what you want on TV, ...

madamez · 30/12/2007 21:54

Just have a quick browse through the Relationships thread: the couples who hate each other, the partners who are physically abusive/mean with money/totally unhelpful round the house/completely hatstand.... SIngle life is great.

bethoo · 30/12/2007 21:55

i know it is hard being a single parent but there are good points of which several already mentioned. i am going to try and have a positive new year and get out there...

singledadofthree · 30/12/2007 23:09

am in a similar position nutty et al - and am still sick of being on my own - much my own fault.

even more this time of year when theres so much to do and everything always depends on me. keep telling myself each year this is my last christmas/new year on my own - yet here i sit on me own...again. oh well - maybe next year will be better.

Vacua · 30/12/2007 23:11

ditto to madamez - there are LOADS of 'AIBU?' threads that make me celebrate living alone (alone with children I mean)

PurpleOne · 30/12/2007 23:19

Agreed it is the time of year.

FWIW, I've been a single mum since 2000 (my absolute came through in December of the same year)
Yes, it is hard, especially in the early days.
As a lot of people stated here, there is an awful lot of positives to being a single mum...do what you want, when you want and how you want.

My dp lives in LA and I miss him like crazy. My family disowned me this year too...I love being a single mum, but it doesn't stop the loneliness though.
Once the dc's are in bed, it's just me, a bottle of wine and MN / Facebook / pc stuff. It's my only lifeline.

Huggles nutcracker and wishing you safe, happy and healthy blessings for 2008 x x

Janos · 31/12/2007 08:24

Totally agree with madamez.

Every time I feel miserable and alone a quick look inrelationships makes me realise that the grass is def not greener on the other side.

Like nutty/singledad I've been on my own for 2 years aside from a couple of flings plus one short relationship which doesn't really count.

Most important thing to me now is my DS, friends and family.

1066andallthat · 31/12/2007 10:11

Morning!

So, short-term you need something for the evenings: have you thought of an OU course? Learning yoga? Book club? Scrap-booking? I'm trying to come up with time-consuming and enjoyable pastimes that can be done, when you are free. Mind you, I am thinking of doing two of these myself.

Keep posting, too - it isn't just you.
