Universal credit question - help please x

Left my abusive H 9 weeks ago.

Applied for universal credit and 5 weeks later it's all been set up.

They have now asked me for a proof of earnings from nov 2020 until nov 2021 from both my and exH.

I've submitted the form but it has got me worried slightly. I am a carer for my disabled son and claim carers allowance for him. Have down for the last 10 years.

I have only put the earnings down for exH on the proof of earnings form as I was told not to include my carers allowance which is fine.

ExH earns a good wage. Does this mean my monthly UC amount will go down because he wasn't a good wage last year?

He isn't contributing to DS at all yet - waiting on cms, and I know I can just about get by with the figure I've been getting so far from UC but don't understand if it could be reduced because of the figures I've had to give them?

If anyone has any info, that would be fab x

I’m not sure why you’d need to include you exs earnings? Do you still live together? It’s based on your current circumstances and household income. If you’re not getting CMS yet then he’s not providing anything for you or DS financially. I would have thought you’d only need include your own income.

No the form was for both of us. I don't know if it's more for him as he's self employed. Maybe they need the info for something. I have no idea but I asked them and they wouldn't tell me anything.

Thanks for replying

Unless you're making a joint claim (which you're not) then his earnings shouldn't be relevant. Think you need to push UC for clarity on this. A helpful free service you could also contact is 'Help to claim' - run by citizens advice. Google it and there's a freephone number you can call.

The reason why both partner’s earnings are asked is to see if you qualify for the benefit cap grace period- incase you do not meet any other criteria for the exemption. It will not affect your claim going forward as you do not have your ex partner on your claim

No problem 🙂

If you are on carers though the benefit CSP doesn’t apply.

Benefit cap obviously
