9 month old baby with a fever

So wise MN community help me .. Please.

Hes 9 months old in a few days. He's has conjunctivitis for 24/36 hours now, been bathing it with saltwater and so far it remains in one eye and doesn't look too rough.

He has woken up around 4 with a fever of 38.3 .. Pretty hysterical and weird initially. Breastfed and given Calpol. Fever down to 37.8

Covid test or antibiotics?? Or 111 in a few hours? Hes back asleep.

So as not to drip feed, single parent of four.. Others are 5, 9 and 11.

I would see how he goes through the rest of the night, then give 111 a call In the morning if there is no improvement. Hope he gets better soon

You should get a covid test, the advice is to do that with any fever.

What do you mean by 'a bit weird'?

loopyapp · 17/01/2021 05:06

That was my thinking - glad someone thought the same - thank you for replying x

This is the NHS page btw, I always used to reread it to go through their checklists www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

It is ok to call someone if you're not sure.

The one thing you did say is the temp has reduced but not gone after Calpol.

loopyapp · 17/01/2021 05:11

He was jittery like henwas cold, crying in a really high pitxhed breathy way.. A little disoriented, couldn't get himself latched on to breastfeed.

After a few moments I got him on a boob, some Calpol in and he started behaving more normally. After 30 mins or so his breathing slowed again and his temp had come from 38.3 to 37.8

I'll ring 111 in a few hours and as you say get a test booked but he does have an obvious conjunctivitis so I want to determine if it needs antibiotics.. Pre covid times would they have given some for conjunctivitis with a temp ?

111, and now. Any infection can lead to sepsis. My youngest had orbital cellulitis with eye infection and was admitted to hospital at 11 days old.

Please, please get advice and do not leave this

inquietant · 17/01/2021 05:16

I don't understand why you would ring 111 in a few hours but not now.

I don't think antibiotics are now standard for conjunctivitis, but the temp not going with Calpol is on the list so if it was me I would ask about that.

Codswallop20 · 17/01/2021 05:16

Please tell me you have seen this OP and do something, this is not OK. I am a nurse as well as a mum, get baby checked out

loopyapp · 17/01/2021 05:27

Im absolutely going to get him seen but as I've said I'm alone with several other children all too young to leave without an adult.

In a few hours I'll be able to reach their dad or my mum but if course there's the added fun of having to ask one of them to isolate for as long as the test results take to come back if they do sit with the older ones.

I May well take them all with me which is less than ideal but if we ens up having to isolate for a few days or if hes positive I'll need either my ex or mum to get us shopping etc.

He is down to 37.6 now and breathing normally, soundly asleep beside me.i won't be able to sleep now so will check temp ever 30 minutes.

How did it go @loopyapp ?

loopyapp · 24/01/2021 13:11

Oh thank you for asking :) it cleared up really quickly to be honest. I feel a bit stupid for making such a fuss at the time. He cammondo crawls and as a result bashes his bog toes quite hard as he goes along our hardwood floors. One of those had gotten pretty sore and I suspect infected at the same time and the temp was likely his body reacting to fighting on two fronts.

Much better now :)
