CMS payable after 18?

Can anyone tell me if maintenance is still payable after 18 if the DC go on to university? Obviously I wouldn't expect to still get it paid to me but does the NRP have to provide support directly to the DC (under CMS, no separate financial order)?

DC now teens and starting to think about how much I will need to save to help them out if it will be solely down to me.

It ends when child benefit ends when they finish compulsory education. After that it’s up to the NRP what if anything they give their DC, unless you divorced and something different was in the consent order.

NRP aren't required to support kids at uni but many do.

I'm a single parent and both him and I support the kids financially but they also work for extras

My ex stopped speaking to me as soon as eldest went to uni as I had asked him if he would be helping to support her directly.
This was 10 years after the divorce but as soon as he didn’t have to pay he stopped speaking to us all in case I dared ask him again.

Thank you all, I suspected that would be the case. My DC know they will have to help fund themselves as well. I can't imagine that he will pay anything that can't be legally enforced so we'll plan ahead based on that.

My partner and I are talking about this right now in regards to how he'll do it, have others transferred a certain amount to the children individually a month as and when they each to go uni?

Trickyboy · 03/12/2020 17:42

Sadly I was never in a position to do this. DD just got a student loan and managed on that. Worked in the holidays to supplement throughout the year .

Pinkyxx · 03/12/2020 18:52

I thought it had to be paid up to 20 if still in education, surely uni qualifies?

You need to have child maintenance arrangements for children under 16 (or under 20 if they’re in approved education or training). If you make a private arrangement you can continue paying after then.

@Pinkyxx only secondary education counts, so year 13 only. Once they're old enough to enrol at uni cms responsibility ends, along with child benefit. I think it's the end of August after they turn 18.

DSS lives with us full time, we have arranged with his mum that once he's finished college, she will pay the money directly to him instead of us, so it'll then be his job to budget/save as needed. He will get some off us, too.
