Child maintenance

Hi

Does child maintenance affect tax credits?

I cant see anything to say it does.

Im looking to rent my own place with my daughter and my ex is willing to pay the rent as child maintenance we are on good terms and im very grateful for this i just wondered if this would affect my tax credits in any way.

I work 30 hours per week so don't get alot from them i also will not be claiming housing benefit.

Does anybody else’s ex partners do this and how does it work?

Thank you

No it doesn’t

midnightstar66 · 31/10/2020 08:54

No, it cannot be relief on therefor does not affect any benefits

stout · 31/10/2020 13:09

Only spousal maintenance I think can be impacted

Chasingsquirrels · 31/10/2020 13:13

Are you already on a single person tax credit claim? If not then any new claim will be Universal Credit not Tax Credits.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 31/10/2020 13:16

It's best to treat is just as child maintenance and pay it directly into your account. You do have to declare if anyone pays anything for you on a regular basis and it can be taken into account. Child maintenance is disregarded so best keep it simple.

You may also find maintenance is disregarded for housing benefit so from all respects you may be better off not labelling as paying your rent

Hi yes im already on a single tax credits claim.

It would be £800 pcm though and i wasn't sure if that would be classed as too much child maintenance

The amount is irrelevant as long as it's paid to you as CM and if asked your exp will confirm this

RandomMess · 31/10/2020 13:41

He can pay you as much CM as he wants put it needs to come to you and then you use it to pay the rent/whatever.

Breastfeedingworries · 31/10/2020 13:42

No such thing as too much maintence, lucky lady!! I get 185 Sad

midnightstar66 · 31/10/2020 13:44

Agree @Breastfeedingworries. I get £120 for 2 dc. I'm glad that not all men are like that. I suppose it's not luck as such. OP just made better life choices when choosing who to have a child with 😆

carly2803 · 31/10/2020 21:36

its irrelevant - also claim housing! and get him to pay you direct, it dosent affect anything

you would be much better off

RB68 · 31/10/2020 21:41

The only thing I would be wary of if he uses paying the rent to control you etc or uses it as a bargaining tool - ie I wont pay the rent if you do x or y or if you don't do as I say

I would make sure that I had a few months rent salted away so if he started being silly about it I could cope. I also would perhaps ask him to pay you then you pay the rent. That way HB and other credits not effected

Rosemariex · 01/11/2020 09:25

Thanks for the advice everyone

When he pays the cm into my bank does he have to state on the transfer child maintenance etc?

Not really but it could make your life easier if he does.

midnightstar66 · 01/11/2020 10:25

My ex doesn't, although as I said it's a measly £30 so unlikely to ever be questioned. Certainly won't do at harm to do so
