I need to write a will

Hi all,
Yet to explore this but wondering if anyone can recommend how to do this cheaply - are there any recommendations or ways for single parents to get a price reduction? Also want to write a letter of my wishes around D's upbringing.
Many thanks for any pointers/signposting.

Hi, you can buy a will writing kit, but tbh I'd recommend getting a will properly written by a solicitor.( I did mine shortly after my DH died as he died without having written a will and it was a bit of a headache sorting out everything.) I think it cost between £100-150 iirc. Might be worth ringing a few probate solicitors near you to get a quote or two.

I used Farewill as recommended on Martin Lewis - they usually have a discount code.

Use Marlow Wills she advertises on here, doesn't crave VAT and she is just brilliant.

Her user name is @MumbleChum but not sure of the capitals tbh...

I have had excellent free advice from her, she specialises in wills only and can all be down on line and over the phone.

Ok it's @mumblechum

Some charities will cover the fees for you in the hope you will leave them something, thus the will is free to you at the time of writing.
I used Cancer Research but other charities offer the same service.
I have no connection with CR other than having my will done through them.

If you're in a union at work they often offer free will writing services. Keep an eye out for 'will awareness week' or whatever its called - I had mine done during one of these with a big discount from the solicitors.

If you have relatively simple financial affairs and wishes, a will shouldn't be a massive expense - and a good one will be worth every penny to your survivors when the time inevitably comes.

I write Wills and deal with Probate and the biggest headache is when people have prepared their own Wills as they are usually wrong in some way.

A lot of Law Firms use charity Free Will Schemes. For example, my Firm prepares Wills under the Cancer Research Free Will Scheme all year, and then various other local schemes which appear one month a year.

You won't have to pay anything under these schemes as long as your Will is 'simple', and even then a kind lawyer will allow a slightly more complicated one!

There are options out there, don't panic. I'm pretty sure Cancer Research UK have a list of participating Law Firms on their site xx
