When you nit comb your dd.. how do you de-nit yourself? if I had a partner I'd get him to check my hair but i don't and I'm never able to nit comb myself as thoroughly as I would like to

Just sit in the bath with the comb and go over and over and over again with really wet conditioned hair.
Could a friend do it?
Have you got them or are you just paranoid? If your just paranoid a sweep with the comb will tell you if you have nits/eggs, if you actually have them maybe some mousse stuf or whatevers on the market nowadays to kill them all before combing so they cant crawl away!

pyjamaqueen · 13/09/2007 21:21

My dh would be crap at that anyway. Just tip your head forward and comb like mad.

MascaraOHara · 13/09/2007 21:21

no, don't have them but it's inevitable if you're cuddling them and stuff.. found some eggs in dd's haor but no nits.. combed mine but couldn't see anything.

If I have to shampoo dd I always shampoo myself as a 'jus in case' but hate to do it as it ruins my colour.

We don't use the shampoo as I prefer to minimise use of chemicals. I find it quite easy to nit comb my own hair in the shower with conditioner. Find I have to comb for at least five minutes though as the nits are sneaky!

Budababe · 13/09/2007 22:10

Have a DH but he is useless at things like that or not here at the right time so I just sit in bath, wash hair, add conditioner and comb and comb and comb. Every 2/3 days if need be. Seems to work.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 13/09/2007 22:12

I had this issue for the first time a few months ago, ended up just treating myself anyway and avoiding having my haircut

PillockOfTheCommunity · 13/09/2007 22:13

you've made my head itch now

lucykate · 13/09/2007 22:16

i am not a lone parent, but i do as others have suggested, sit in bath, lashings of tea tree conditioner and just comb & comb & comb.

dh doesn't know what he's looking for, tells me i have loads of eggs when really its dandruff

maisym · 13/09/2007 22:16

not a single mum but when my kids had nits I just used a nit comb and conditioner everyday for a week or so.

Tinkerbel5 · 14/09/2007 15:33

I agree about the tea tree conditioner, the nits hate the stuff as it stuns them, so they should come out with no problem.

MascaraOHara · 14/09/2007 15:40

I have tea tree for dd..

Never thought of sitting in the bath (prob as always shower).. wouldn't the eggs be floating around you and stuff and yuk what if an actual louse fell out

I do mine hanging over the bath with the mixer spray from the bath taps as though I'm washing my hair (no shower). My hair is about 2ft long and very thick so doing it is rather time-consuming as well as awkward but I won't have my hair cut.

MascaraOHara · 14/09/2007 16:07

Is it possibly to do it and keep the comb in contact with the scalp? does the hait not get too thick?

OP posts:
MascaraOHara · 14/09/2007 16:07

that should read is it possible to do it with your head upside down (would certainly be easier)

OP posts:
lucykate · 14/09/2007 16:29

i've never tried it with my head upside down, my hair is a short bob (not a pop however ), and i've always done it sat up. the thing to watch is if you're using a nitty gritty comb, the prongs have grooves in them, and can slice through the hair so be really careful doing it yourself. on me, i use a normal nit comb, not the nitty gritty.

MascaraOHara · 14/09/2007 16:33

I've got a bob now. and not got a nitty gritty so will try upright

bookwormtailmum · 14/09/2007 16:35

I've always done it like that - I've never combed my hair out in the bath as it's never occurred to me to try it that way. I'm not sure I'd appreciate sharing my bath with 'walkers' or even nit eggs though. I tend to run the nit comb through my hair everytime I wash my hair just in case - it's also fantastic for removing loose hairs.

DarthVader · 14/09/2007 16:50

You can do it in the bath no probs
