Single mum wanting to start my own venture. Crazy?

I am recently single and have a DC. I work at a reputable bank and have a fairly comfortable salary.

Since a year back I had been toying with a business idea which I am very eager to give a go. However I am conscious it would be a massive drain on my finances and time. Its a software based idea and I am good on tech but it also means it will require a fair amount of investment from my own savings.

The other option is I forget about it and continue with my job . DC goes to private school so keep that going safely.

Has anyone done this successfully before. Does it sound like a crazy amount of risk to take. What should I be aware of? XH is a horrible abuser. So don't expect much from him in terms of support.

Can you dip a toe in, reduce your hours and dedicate one day a week to your business idea to see how it goes?

HavelockVetinari · 04/02/2020 19:54

I'd be careful - don't risk more than you can afford to lose, your DC would lose his/her school at a time when he/she is already upset by separation. Is it something that can wait or is it time critical? Could you get a career break with guaranteed return?

I would wait until you have enough set aside to pay fees until the end of school.

Sensible advice. Thank you ladies. I might just wait.

Don’t lose faith in yourself though.
Perhaps spend some time working out the set up costs in detail, do loads of research, put feelers out to see how popular your service would be and so on. Perhaps listen to some podcasts with female tech entrepreneurs (there are some great ones).
I listened to one in particular (which I can’t remember, anyway it was American) but it was about mentoring programmes for women setting up in the tech industry. I wonder if there’s something similar here? A mentoring programme that may give you a bit more confidence , develop your networks and help you avoid industry pitfalls.
I wish you luck OP.

Women in tech revolution may offer you some inspiration and practical support.
There are podcasts from the founders too if I remember correctly.

Thanks Jelly. Your message made me teary eyed. Been a bit emotional lately. Feeling miserable how so many of us would never make it to their full potential because life and bad decisions got in the way
