Keeping phones at night

DD 14 wants her phone at night. She says she can be mature and not spend all night on it and all her friends have their phones.

I already think she's on it too much and she probably wouldn't manage it well. She has poor impulse control.

Am I really out of step with other parents?

Why does she want it at night if she's not going to use it?

Where is your phone at night?

I learned the hard way; my parents allowed me my phone/iPad when I was 14/15 I stayed up until silly o'clock... I was still woken up at 7:15 for school.
I'm 24 now and I am in bed at 10pm on a week day!

It doesn't matter if her friends have their phones or not - if she's not going to use it, there's no point her having it.

We take DSS's off him, as he will sit there on it for too long and then be tired in the morning, no matter what he promises.

Take it off her. There is no need for her to have it. She can have it right up until she goes up to bed.

Good point - why does she need it if she's not going to use it?

My phone is on my bedside because I have an elderly parent and I need to be contactable 24/7. I'm actually pretty good at leaving it alone at night but I'm old and sensible Grin

My 12 year old Ds is meant to keep his pone downstairs . Last week came back late I wasn’t feeling well so went straight up to bed with him . Forgot about phone an hour and a half later caught him on you tube .

Obviously my child is younger but I don’t see me changing my mind at any point soon.

My daughter is 12, I take her phone off her every evening at around 8pm. This works well for us.

However her 6yo sister managed to sneak a tablet into bed with her and was awake watching tv on that till I caught her at 10.0pm.

There is no way I would let them sleep with a phone in their rooms.
