Distant family member is back in the UK (London) after travelling, 8 months pregnant, single and estranged from immediate family. She has had MH issues in the past, is vulnerable, has no money and seems to have no reliable friends. The father is the other side of the world and support from him remains uncertain. I am able to provide some financial support to get her through the birth and the following few months but live too far away to offer hands on help (and, for a host of other reasons can't offer her accommodation with me). Can anyone offer any advice on any support systems that might be open to her? Benefits, legal, mental health support, social worker, counsellors, help with the baby...anything really. Thank you .

Homestart? Her hv should be able to point her in the right direction, also if she has a local children’s centre

What I would really recommend is talking to Gingerbread the single parents' charity. Their helpline will go through all the benefits etc that your family member is entitled to and they are brilliant. Word of warning that you may hold for up to 20 minutes but please don't give up as I have used them many times for help as a single mum. You can also go to another website called Entitled To and that will give you similar advice about what benefits she can get. I would also recommend going to the GP to alert them about MH issues to plug in to support as that is so important. Also, go onto local authority website and look for single parent support in the area and there will probably be coffee mornings and other meetups for her and her future child when he/she is here. Important to also engage with the ante natal mental health team and alert her midwife to these issues as there is support there! You are a wonderful person to help but there are support networks out there! Do ask me anything else if you think of it as I am a solo mum with twins who are now 12 years old and have struggled with MH issues all my life...www.gingerbread.org.uk/what-we-do/contact-us/helpline/
