Taking chiildren on holiday alone

Before I begin I'm not a single parent but I was hoping that some of you would be able to advise me.

DP is really tied up with work this summer and couldn't get much time off at all.

I don't drive but I've booked a little cottage in Wales and we're going to get there by train. I'm ordering food from Tesco to save carrying everything with us and there's a Co-op about 10 minutes away.

I'm really looking forward to it but suddenly worried about taking children alone. They are 6 and 13 and they fight. We'll be by the beach and there's a steam railway near by and lots of lovely walking etc.

I'm just convinced its going to go wrong. Normally when we go on holiday me and dp sometimes take one child each to give us adn them a break from the squabbling. The evenings could be long.

Perhaps I'm just being silly - but please tell me your coping strategies for taking your DC's away alone, espcially if you can't drive

Sorry to come on this board when I'm not a single parent, just thought this was the best group of people to ask.

Thank you for any help

It’s tough when they fight. I only have one child, so we get to watch other siblings fight. However, I was a dreadful child. Let them fight sometimes.

But they are old enough to know that this is not acceptable to do this all the time. Why do you and your husband pander to them by keeping them apart? If you have a cottage away from other people its better.

Take them for lots of walks, try to distract them. They are big enough to carry things for you, rather than the other way round.

Public transport rocks, especially if you don’t have a pushchair.
