Names and birth certificates

The appropriate government resource hasn't got any pearls of wisdom to shed on this one so I'm appealing to the mumsnet knowledge base for help:

Do I have to have the same surname as the one I wish to give my child?

I want the child I am currently trying to evict (overdue by five days) to have the same name as my daughter seeing as they have the same father. I'm not sure that I want the father to be named on the certificate though. Will I be permitted to register the child as 'Baby Father's-Name' or will I have to register as 'Baby My-Name' if I go alone to register?

Thanks in advance.

We had to both be there because we are not married and we wanted our dcs to have both our names with a hyphen. I could have registered them with my name on my own, but not dps name.Thia was a while ago - it might have changed.

Thanks for the replies. At this rate I don;t think I'll be registering the little sod until Christmas anyway as it's still sat playing silly buggers in my uterus refusing to move.

Thanks again.

my dd had her fathers surname but didnt have him named on the certificate

Well, there's hope then. I might ring the register office tomorrow and ask to speak to the registrar. If it comes to it I'll need to get wheels in motion so that I can change my own name before the deadline for registering the new baby flies past.

I used to work as a registrar agnesnitt. You can give the baby any name you wish. It doesn't have to have either parents surname.
