Working 16 hours

Hi there,

I'm a single Mum to a 2 and a 3 year old. I've always worked full time before I had my little ones but was forced into this position when my ex developed a serious drinking problem and I had to go it alone.

I really want to start working part time but I'm not sure if I will be better off money wise.

I'm receipt of full housing benefit and council tax relief including income support.

Thank you in advance X

Hi.
I can't comment on your situation but working made me better off after having my little boy.
I don't quite know how I managed on income support for the 3 months I did when SMP ended!
Working made me feel more normal again. It also developed my son amazingly during his time in childcare. He is now at school and is a wonderful, kind and well socialised little boy.
I don't know what the threshold is for working now, but back then I had to work at least 16 hours a week. I started at 25, up to 30, the up to 35 and have now settled at 30 hours a week around his school day.
In no way am I well off but in comparison to not working I definitely am better financially. Luckily I received help with his childcare. It was never as much as they say they help you with but every bit helped me.
I would always encourage returning to work. Not only for the financial benefit, but for the break it gives you away from being a Mom. I love being a Mom. It's my favourite thing in the world, but that break to be able to interact with others is so welcome xx
