Hey.
I am a bit confused about housing benefit, I know it differs based on area but what was the max housing you had and were you working? Thank u

Housing benefit amount will be based on income. Likely it will be universal credit though if you are a new claimant?

Thank u for replying. I wouldn't be working when I claimed as I am caring for my two kids and would be new to universal credit. I am just unsure if it would cover the whole of my £750-850 rent or whether there is. Max. X

Hi :)

There is usually a cap on how much HB your council will pay - it’s called a local housing allowance (LHA). If you google your council LHA it should tell you; if not you should be able to call them and sort this out.

Yeah it will depend if your rent is typical of your area, or if you are paying over the amount they deem it’s possibke to have a house that meets your needs. If unit has too many bedrooms for your needs or is “luxury” for example and hundreds above usual rents in your area, they would pay a percentage.
I know universal credit isn’t as much as it used to be for people on tax credits though.
Bear in mind it takes 6 weeks from start of claim to get any money aswell
