I'm new here. Just wondered if anyone has any experience living in London as a lone parent on about 36k a year plus 400 per month maintenance? Would it be enough? Would I get benefits?

I've been offered a great job which has a lower starting salary than I'd want in London but great prospects for moving up the career ladder. DS is two and would get free childcare in 2019.

Any advice would be great.

I earn less and manage just fine. You may be able to get tax credits, I doubt you'd be able to get housing benefits though.

You won’t get benefits at that level. London is great and you can have lots of opportunity. Just make sure you live somewhere more affordable.
There are plenty of good commuter towns with decent schools etc.

Good luck

I've done it on much less, and its been fine. You won't get any benefits. ( you won't need them) What is your housing situation?

Clairetree1 · 19/08/2018 07:52

actually, you might get some childcare tax credit? not sure. no housing benefit or anything like that

Thanks for advice.

No housing benefit surprises me. Most two bed flats are in excess of 1200 a month. I'd struggle to afford a flat, council tax and bills etc

Where are you looking? Prices vary hugely by area.
