What do they eat?

Ok be honest, what percentage of your weekly food shop is fresh fruit and vegetables?
How many of you can honestly say your children eat 5 portions of fruit and veg daily?
Just a general consensus will do, as I'm seriously struggling!

Why are you only targeting lone parents?
Do you not think we feed our children properly?

abbsisspartacus · 28/08/2017 19:18

I try but my kids limit themselves one will eat flat peaches and strawberries one won't etc so I rotate it through the shopping weeks I buy one child favourite fruit a week and fruit they will eat if they are forced to

And never buy fruit and veg you hate it reduces waste

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 19:20

No it's just I'm a lone parent so I'm trying to get some responses that can relate to my circumstances.
Hostile, much??

Thanks Abbs sounds similar to what I do, I just think 5 portions of fruit and veg is slightly unrealistic! Plus fruit is so expensive!

Mine love fruit like melon and watermelon. They'll eat raw carrot and cucumber and even celery, but they are not so fond of cooked veg

Backingvocals · 28/08/2017 19:24

Mine really don't. Prob two per day at lunch (decent school dinners). Maybe one at dinner but not if we have egg on toast for dinner for example. Maybe an apple.

So 3-4 on a good day. We just got back from holiday in n Wales and virtually none the whole week Blush.

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 19:25

Thank goodness! 5 on a very good day is mildly achievable.... but everyday?! I feel like I'm doing it all wrong!

Probably 5 or 6 a day, shop at Aldi or Lidl where veg is cheaper.

Luckily my teen DS loves fruit and veg. Today he's had orange, mini cucumbers, grapes, watermelon, broccoli and peas. (As well as a load of crap ! - he's not a angel .....)

NoCapes · 28/08/2017 19:29

I think mine average at 3 or 4, some days it's 6 some days it's 1 but it generally averages out over the week
They have a glass of milk and a piece of fruit before bed every night, always have so that's become habit now they don't even think about it
Smoothies or a glass of fruit juice also counts so I rely on those things if the rest of the day hasn't gone well
I buy a lot of fresh fruit but no expensive stuff, mine don't like berries and expensive stuff anyway, but they eat apples bananas and grapes like they're going out of fashion
Veg I tend to rely on frozen besides salad stuff

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 19:33

Maybe I'm not doing too bad then, they're eating apples before bed now.
I suppose I feel guilty for not cooking homecooked meals everyday with 3 portions of fresh veg etc, but who has time for that?!
Sandwiches and raw veg is the way forward for me Grin

Probably not five a day every day. As much as I set a good example and we grow stuff on the allotment they aren't always keen on fruit and veg.

They do like watermelon, peppers, bananas and tomatoes. And they'll happily eat green beans or peas stirred into a cheesy pasta sauce.

I know they're not technically five a day but they also like a small portion of plain nuts, usually pistachios, walnuts, brazils or cashews. They also have orange juice with breakfast.

Ellieboolou27 · 28/08/2017 20:03

It depends on the person, two of my best friends are lone parents, both have one child. One lives off takeaways such as KFC, Chinese or freezer foods such as burgers etc, the other puts me to shame and cooks everything from scratch including homemade chips!

I'm married with 2 dc and manage 2-3 on most days. I do things like chilli with loads of kidney beans which count as one portion of veg (around 2 tbsp for kids). You could freeze half and save money on shopping that way.
I think it's more to do with planning and preparing than cost as vegetables are quite cheap in most supermarkets now.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 28/08/2017 21:01

Tinned and frozen fruit and vegetables count towards your five a day, FYI.

lannister · 29/08/2017 18:10

If I let them, my kids would eat 10 apples a day! They won't stop munching on fruit and I find it so expensive. I now buy less fresh fruit but a mixture of juice and fruit pots. I wish they would more veg though.

domesticatedidiot · 29/08/2017 21:19

Veg has to be my downfall too Lannister, youngest will happily munch through all veg or at least try, eldest it's like pulling teeth!

I grow a lot of my own veg- cook it all up with passata and blend it- freeze in batches and use it for almost everything! Pasta sauce/pizza topping/under cheese on toast/in savoury pancakes/added to mince/mixed with chicken in pies etc. My little one (2) won't eat veg if he knows it's in there so have to be sneaky 😂. He would live on fruit if I'd let him...again I just try to prepare as much as I can in batches- anything on special that can be puréed and frozen I buy and at this time of year we're picking lots of blackberries and windfall apples.
I'd be completely lost without my freezer!!

zozozoo · 29/08/2017 22:18

We're at four usually ie one with every meal and afternoon snack. Must remember the vitamins...

Holidayhooray · 03/09/2017 21:01

Honestly? About 8 portions a day.
Huge fruit salad at brekkie
Carrots and cucumber at lunch
Apple snack
Pile of steamed veg at dinner
Berry salad for pudding.

They love it. I love it. It's all they've ever known
