Hi, my sister is 18 weeks pregnant. I have sorted the housing forms for her as she's on her own so obviously will need to be housed. I realise she'll get her rent/council tax paid for her and she'll get £57.45 lone parent benefit and child benefit. But how much child tax credit will she get when the baby is born, (I've found out it'll be more in the first year)? Am asking because she's worried she won't cope - bit late in the day to panic though! Any lone parents with 1 child out there willing to disclose?

2babesmum · 23/03/2007 20:53

couldn't tell you, but if you want to cope, you do. it's bloody difficult but can be done, especially if she has her family behind her, which you sound like you are

i was 21 and very scared but 4 years later i'm brave enough to have another!

ScoobyDooooo · 23/03/2007 20:55

I think the law gives you something like £114 a week to live on they do not include child benfit in this. Soif she gets £57.45 aweek IS then the rest will be made up from tax credits.

EllieK · 23/03/2007 20:55

that sounds about right TBH, i was on £108 maternity pay, £3.30 income support, CB, CTC so i guess it would have added up to about that

gemmiegoatlegs · 23/03/2007 20:56

aaah...that's a shame. My sister was totally the other way and went to uni and did her nurse's taraining until her due date. i'm so proud of her. is there no way your sis would consider finishing her education?

That sounds about right, I was lone parent and working (but not earning very much) and was getting around that amount.

2babesmum · 23/03/2007 20:56

Yeah I know she'll cope but I'm finding that if I don't do these things for her she's just sitting on her bum - she wouldn't be on the housing list if it weren't for me filling in the forms for her and waving them under her nose!

There is working family tax credits for people who work & child tax credits for people who dont!

2babesmum · 23/03/2007 20:58

wombat2 was that £167 or £114?

Gemmie, really tried to get her to finish - ironically she was doing a diploma in chilcare! But hasn't been to her placement and now they won't take her back - not surprizingly.

i'd say £167 is probably right

2babesmum · 23/03/2007 21:15

Hmmm, seems loads. Thanks a lot for all your help. I won't quote anything to her until I've made enquires I think - she'll think all her xmases have come at once!

I had 78. something with two children on income support. I think they do pay a highter amount with a baby under one. Go on the tax credits website.

2babesmum · 23/03/2007 21:24

Tax credits website are quoting £109 before age 1 and £88 after. But as you say, you got £78 for two. I must be doing something wrong?

My best mate is on income support & gets £57.45 income support & then she gets £98 child tax credits she has 2 children a boy of 5 years & a girl of 6 months. She also gets her child benefit.

ThisEasterTime · 23/03/2007 21:30

Also have a look on jobcentreplus.gov.uk for guidelines on maternity allowance. Also I received a grant of 300 to help me towards costs. Good luck x

2babesmum · 23/03/2007 21:56

Thanks, just done that. She's entitled to £500 one off grant but no maternity allowance as she's never worked.

I would have thought her benefits would be about £110 or £120 a week and child ben on top.

Have never got anything useful from the jobcentre website but have a VERY lovely lone parent advisor at the local jobcentre.

kellogs · 24/03/2007 20:41

I have 3 kids & i get 110 a week so i don't think your sis will get 167 or 114 seems a bit high. I'd call the inland revenue & ask them for advice. TBH i only get 200 quid for me & the 3 kids.
