Change of name / deed poll question...

I know that this has been raised here before but I don't want to remove my ex's surname (iro of my ds!), I just want to add mine to it (eg: from Master DS Smith to Master DS Smith Jones / Jones Smith!).

I believe that I would need my ds's father's consent for this but does anyone know how to register this legally? I have googled "deed poll" and have had lots of companies offering to change the name quickly and cheaply! I obviously want to get this right, does anyone know the official way of registering a name change??

TIA!!

I was told that I could just add my name to his original but needed permission to change his name

Fluffybubble · 27/02/2007 13:41

Thx for that both of you. I don't mind trying to obtain ds's dad's consent, have some bargaining power at the moment!

When I asked my solicitor about changing my name after divorce she just said that I can use whatever name I like! I imagine that the passport office etc might object to that!

Sniff, have you added your name then?

ive just had my exes name put on a change of name deed so that his surname is now registered as my sons middle name.is done through solicitor, has to be signed/sworn.he isnt on birth cert and my son has my surname but it was too keep the pratt happy. ilnever use it

For a change of name to a passport or birth certificate you'll need a deed poll signed by solicitor, they charge about £50 for this. Of course, you can call him whatever you like and he can be known by any surname you want at school etc, they will just have his birth certificate name on all oficial documents but refer to him by other name e.g. on register forms., but officially you'll need the solicitor, plus the cost of amending the birth certificate and getting a new passport!

My son is known by my surname at school even though we havn't changed his name by deed poll yet, school very understanding over it and DS doesn't know his original surname, as soon as I have the money the deed poll will be done!

I changed my name online - I think the site was called "thelawis". It cost me £20, & no solicitor involved. At the time, I was a bit dubious, but the deed poll that was sent to me (had to sign 2 copies & send one back) is a definitely a legal document & has been accepted by the passport office, bank etc as such.(& I now have a silly longwinded double barrelled name that no one can spell & doesn't fit into any box on any document! Doh!)

Thanks for your replies!

My Uncle is a retired Solicitors Clerk (not sure what that is) and just co-incidently mentioned that he would happily draw up a document for me the other day.

I didn't know that you could use any name, I thought that it had to be official. (I mainly wanted to use my surname for pre-school etc) so your info has been v useful, thx . (Chimpy - mine would also be ridiculous double barrelled rubbish sounding name, but it is the principle now! Am sure my ds will hate me for it later!!)
